Winery Background & History

Château Certan de May, located in the esteemed Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France, traces its origins back to the 16th century. The estate was established by the Scottish de May family, who were granted the land by royal decree. Over the centuries, Château Certan de May has been recognized for producing wines that exemplify the richness and elegance characteristic of Pomerol.

Producer & Winemaker

The Barreau family has owned and managed the estate since 1925, with Jean-Luc Barreau currently at the helm. In 2013, renowned consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet, former winemaker at Petrus, began advising the estate, bringing his expertise to enhance the quality and expression of the wines.

Vineyard

The vineyard spans approximately 5 hectares, situated on the famed Pomerol plateau between Vieux Château Certan and Château Pétrus. The soils are a mix of clay and gravel, ideal for cultivating Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines have an average age of 35 years, and sustainable viticultural practices are employed to maintain vine health and respect for the environment.

The Wine

Château Certan de May 2015 is a red Bordeaux blend that reflects the estate’s dedication to producing wines of depth, complexity, and aging potential. The 2015 vintage is noted for its opulence and balance, showcasing the harmonious integration of fruit, tannins, and acidity.

Vintage

The 2015 growing season in Bordeaux was marked by favorable conditions, with a warm, dry summer leading to optimal ripening of the grapes. The resulting wines are celebrated for their concentration, balance, and aromatic complexity.

ABV%

The 2015 Château Certan de May has an alcohol content of approximately 13.5%.

Vinification and Aging Method

Hand-harvested grapes underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve fruit purity. Malolactic fermentation occurred in vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels (50% new) for 16 to 18 months. This meticulous vinification and aging process enhanced the wine’s complexity and structure.

Grape Varietals

The 2015 blend consists of approximately 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the traditional varietal composition of the estate.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep garnet color with ruby highlights.

Nose: Aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry, interwoven with notes of truffle, cedar, and subtle floral hints.

Palate: Full-bodied with a harmonious balance of rich black fruits, complemented by well-integrated tannins and a touch of spice. The finish is long and lingering, with a pleasant freshness.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine pairs well with roasted meats, such as lamb or beef, as well as game dishes and hearty stews. It also complements a variety of cheeses, including aged cheddar and Gouda.

Service Methods

Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure.

Decanting: Decanting for 30 minutes to an hour is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full complexity.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2015 Château Certan de May is suitable for consumption now but can continue to develop with further cellaring. Proper storage conditions—cool, dark, and humid—will preserve its quality and allow for additional aging potential.

Scores

James Suckling: 97 points – “A tight and focused red with blackberry, blueberry, and stone aromas and flavors. Full body, firm and silky tannins, and a flavorful finish. Needs three or four years to soften. Better in 2022.”

Wine Advocate: 95+ points – “The 2015 Certan de May is composed of 80% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 16% Cabernet Franc, displaying a medium garnet-purple color and nose of warm red cherries, mulberries, crushed red and black plums, and raspberry leaves with nuances of wild thyme, dried roses, cloves, and eucalyptus. Medium to full-bodied and boasting great harmony in the mouth, the palate delivers loads of red and black fruit layers interspersed with floral and herb accents and framed by a firm, ripe, fine-grained backbone, finishing with wonderful length and freshness.”

Wine Enthusiast: 94 points – “With its proportion of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has an elegant profile, while the Merlot reflects the natural opulence of the vintage. Acidity, concentration, and black fruits are all there, along with the tannin that will allow the wine to age. Drink from 2026.”
