Winery Background and History

Château Haut-Bergey, located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a storied history dating back to the 15th century. The estate has evolved over the centuries, with significant developments in the 18th century when it was recognized for its quality vineyards. In the 1950s, the Garcin family acquired the property, initiating extensive renovations and replanting efforts to restore its former glory. Their commitment to excellence has positioned Château Haut-Bergey as a notable producer in the region, consistently delivering wines that reflect the unique terroir of Pessac-Léognan.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the ownership of the Garcin family, Château Haut-Bergey has flourished. The winemaking team employs a blend of traditional practices and modern techniques to craft wines that express the estate’s distinctive character. Their dedication to quality and innovation has earned the château recognition among Bordeaux enthusiasts.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The estate encompasses approximately 28.5 hectares of vineyards, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The gravelly soils, combined with clay and limestone subsoils, provide excellent drainage and contribute to the complexity of the wines. The proximity to the Garonne River moderates temperatures, creating a favorable microclimate that protects the vines from frost and promotes even ripening. Sustainable viticultural practices are employed to maintain soil health and biodiversity, ensuring the longevity and quality of the vineyards.

Grape Varietals

The 2010 vintage is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes were hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and quality. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing for precise management of the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to enhance texture and stability. The wine was then aged for approximately 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with about 50% being new oak, imparting complexity and integrating tannins.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2010 Château Haut-Bergey has an alcohol content of approximately 14%.

Tasting Notes

This vintage exhibits a deep garnet color with purple hues. The nose reveals aromas of black currant, plum, tobacco, and smoky notes. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with flavors of dark fruits, complemented by well-integrated tannins and a lingering finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

The 2010 Château Haut-Bergey pairs well with roasted meats, game dishes, and mature cheeses. Its structure and depth enhance rich flavors, making it a versatile companion for hearty meals.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully express its aromatic profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under optimal conditions, the 2010 Château Haut-Bergey has the potential to develop further complexity over the next decade, with a peak drinking window extending through 2030.
