Winery Background and History
Quinta de Azevedo, located in Portugal’s Vinho Verde region, has a rich history dating back to the 11th century. In the 1980s, the estate was acquired and meticulously restored by Sogrape, a prominent family-run wine and port company. Sogrape modernized the vineyards and winemaking facilities, blending tradition with contemporary techniques to produce high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Vinho Verde.
Producer and Winemaker
Sogrape, established in 1942, is one of Portugal’s leading wine producers, managing over 800 hectares of vineyards across the country. At Quinta de Azevedo, the winemaking is led by experienced winemaker Miguel Pessanha. Under his guidance, the team employs modern vinification methods to craft fresh and elegant wines, ensuring that each bottle embodies the estate’s commitment to quality and the distinctive characteristics of the region.
Vineyards and Microclimate
Situated between the Lima and Cávado rivers in the Barcelos commune of Vinho Verde, Quinta de Azevedo encompasses 35 hectares of vineyards. The region’s maritime climate, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, offers mild temperatures and abundant rainfall, fostering a lush, green landscape ideal for viticulture. The vineyards are planted with a 70/30 split between Loureiro and Pedernã (known elsewhere in Portugal as Arinto), utilizing vertical trellising systems to enhance air circulation and reduce disease risk. This setup, combined with the region’s granitic soils, contributes to the production of wines with vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve their fresh and aromatic qualities. Upon arrival at the on-site winery, they undergo gentle pressing, and the must is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. This process maintains the varietal purity and crispness of the wine. The 2022 vintage did not undergo oak aging, allowing the natural fruit flavors and regional characteristics to shine through. The wine is then stabilized and filtered before being bottled under screwcap to retain its freshness.

Tasting Notes
The Azevedo Loureiro Alvarinho 2022 presents a delicately fragrant bouquet, showcasing floral aromas characteristic of the Loureiro grape, complemented by subtle citrus notes from the Alvarinho. On the palate, it offers a refreshing profile with zesty lime acidity, balanced by the Alvarinho’s roundness, leading to a harmonious and elegant finish. The wine’s minerality and crispness make it a quintessential expression of the Vinho Verde region.
Food & Wine Pairing
This versatile white wine pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and floral notes complement seafood dishes such as prawns, clams, and grilled fish. It also enhances the flavors of light salads, sushi, and Asian-inspired cuisine. For cheese pairings, consider young, tangy varieties like goat cheese or feta, which harmonize with the wine’s freshness and aromatic profile.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and refreshing character, serve the Azevedo Loureiro Alvarinho 2022 well-chilled at a temperature between 8°C and 10°C (46°F to 50°F). Use medium-sized white wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate. This wine is best enjoyed young to capture its vibrant freshness, so it’s advisable to consume it within a year or two of the vintage date.
Storage and Aging Potential
While the Azevedo Loureiro Alvarinho 2022 is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it can be stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with appropriate humidity—for up to two years.
