Winery Background and History

Bodega Garzón, established in 1999 in Uruguay, has rapidly gained international acclaim for its commitment to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. Situated near Punta del Este, La Barra, and José Ignacio, the estate spans over 1,000 small vineyard blocks across rolling hills. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, approximately eleven miles away, provides a maritime influence that moderates temperatures and contributes to the distinct character of their wines. Bodega Garzón emphasizes sustainable practices and innovation, positioning itself as a leader in South American winemaking.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Bodega Garzón is led by oenological consultant Alberto Antonini and winemaker Germán Bruzzone. Alberto Antonini, an esteemed Italian winemaker, brings a wealth of international experience, focusing on crafting wines that express their origin with authenticity. Germán Bruzzone, a native Uruguayan, has been with Bodega Garzón since its inception, overseeing vineyard management and winemaking processes. Together, they employ a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the natural attributes of the terroir and the Tannat grape to shine through in each vintage.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Single Vineyard Tannat 2019 is sourced from select vineyard blocks characterized by steep slopes and thin, well-draining soils rich in ballast. These conditions, combined with the cooling Atlantic breezes, create a microclimate that is cooler than other areas of the estate. This unique environment allows for slow, even ripening of the Tannat grapes, resulting in wines with balanced acidity, concentrated flavors, and a distinct minerality reflective of the granite-laden soils.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2019 Single Vineyard Tannat underwent fermentation in 80-hectoliter cement tanks, a method chosen to maintain the purity of fruit flavors and enhance the wine’s texture. Post-fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 to 18 months in large untoasted French oak casks, ranging from 25 to 50 hectoliters. This aging process imparts subtle complexity without overpowering the varietal’s inherent characteristics, allowing for a harmonious integration of oak nuances and fruit expression.

Tasting Notes

The Bodega Garzón Single Vineyard Tannat 2019 exhibits a deep purple hue. On the nose, it reveals an elegant bouquet of red fruits, including cherries and strawberries, complemented by notes of black plums, tobacco, and dark chocolate, all set against a backdrop of subtle spice. The palate is full-bodied and juicy, with ripe tannins providing structure and a fresh acidity that adds vibrancy. Flavors mirror the nose, with the addition of a mineral undertone that reflects the unique terroir. The finish is long and balanced, leaving a lasting impression of fruit and spice.

Food & Wine Pairing

This robust Tannat pairs exceptionally well with rich, flavorful dishes. Traditional Uruguayan cuisine, such as roasted lamb seasoned with herbs like sage and mint, complements the wine’s depth and complexity. The wine’s firm structure and acidity also make it a suitable match for cured cheeses like Parmesan, as well as hearty stews and grilled game meats. For a classic pairing, consider a duck cassoulet, where the wine’s spicy notes enhance the savory flavors of the dish.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure, serve the Single Vineyard Tannat 2019 at a temperature between 14°C and 16°C (57°F to 61°F). Decanting the wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving can help to aerate it, allowing the bouquet to open up and the tannins to soften, enhancing the overall tasting experience. Utilizing large, Bordeaux-style glasses will further concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature around 12°C (54°F), and with moderate humidity—the Single Vineyard Tannat 2019 has the potential to age gracefully for 8 to 10 years. As it matures, the wine is expected to develop additional layers of complexity, with tertiary notes such as leather, dried fruits, and earthy undertones emerging to complement the existing fruit and spice profile. Regularly monitoring the wine’s development will ensure it is enjoyed at its peak maturity.
