Winery Background and History
Founded in 1987 in Haro, La Rioja, Bodegas Roda is renowned for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Rioja region. The winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture and meticulous vineyard management, focusing on indigenous grape varieties. Sela, introduced as their youngest wine, aims to offer a fresh and vibrant expression, appealing to both new and seasoned wine enthusiasts.
Producer and Winemaker
Bodegas Roda operates under the guidance of a dedicated team committed to showcasing the purity and elegance of Rioja wines. Their approach combines traditional winemaking techniques with modern innovations, ensuring each bottle reflects the character of the region. The winemaking process involves spontaneous fermentation and careful aging to maintain the wine’s freshness and complexity.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for Sela 2022 are sourced from bush vines aged between 15 to 30 years, cultivated using sustainable practices. These vineyards are situated at elevations ranging from 450 to 600 meters, primarily on limestone soils rich in chalk and low in nutrients. The 2022 growing season experienced a late start due to cool spring temperatures, followed by a hot and dry summer with significant heatwaves, leading to an early and healthy harvest beginning on September 6th.

Vinification & Aging Methods
Hand-harvested grapes are carefully selected and undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in French oak vats, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 12 months in second-use French oak barrels to enhance complexity without overpowering the fruit character. Natural stabilization and clarification with lyophilized egg white ensure the wine’s clarity and stability.

Tasting Notes
Sela 2022 presents a bright red hue with a vibrant rim. The nose is intensely fruity, dominated by fresh red fruits such as cherries, raspberries, and red plums, complemented by subtle herbal notes and a hint of limestone minerality. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a lively freshness, showcasing fine tannins and a persistent finish that leaves a pleasant sensation of fruit and vitality.
Food & Wine Pairing
This versatile wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, including grilled lamb, roasted poultry, cured meats, and semi-cured cheeses. Its fresh acidity and fruit-forward profile also make it an excellent companion to Mediterranean cuisine, such as tapas, paellas, and vegetable-based dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure, serve Sela 2022 at a temperature between 15°C and 17°C (59°F to 63°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up the wine’s aromas and soften the tannins. Using medium-sized red wine glasses will enhance the tasting experience by concentrating the bouquet and directing the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with moderate humidity—Sela 2022 can develop additional complexity over the next 5 to 7 years. As it ages, expect the emergence of more nuanced tertiary notes, such as dried fruits, leather, and earthy undertones, adding depth to its fresh fruit character.
