Winery Background and History
Bruno Colin, a prominent figure in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, hails from a lineage of esteemed vintners. In 2003, following the division of Domaine Colin-Deléger upon his father Michel’s retirement, Bruno and his brother Philippe established their own domains. Bruno, with the support of his wife Stéphanie, manages approximately eight hectares of vineyards spread across thirty parcels in five communes, including Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Santenay, and Maranges. He vinifies nineteen distinct cuvées, twelve of which are premier crus. Bruno’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes balance, both aromatically and texturally, showcasing the delicate minerality and nuanced complexity inherent to each vineyard. His approach reflects a commitment to expressing the unique terroirs of the Côte de Beaune, producing wines that are both elegant and expressive.
Producer and Winemaker
Bruno Colin serves as both the producer and winemaker for his estate. With a hands-on approach, he oversees all aspects of viticulture and vinification. His style is characterized by a focus on purity and precision, aiming to highlight the distinct characteristics of each vineyard parcel. Bruno’s dedication to minimal intervention and respect for the environment is evident in his farming practices, which follow the principles of lutte raisonnée, or “reasoned struggle,” emphasizing sustainable agriculture.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for the Bourgogne Chardonnay 2021 are sourced from vineyards averaging 21 years in age, encompassing a total area of 0.37 hectares. These vineyards are situated in the Bourgogne appellation within the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy, France. The soils are predominantly composed of clay and limestone, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s minerality. The Côte de Beaune benefits from a continental climate, characterized by cold winters and warm summers. The southeast-facing slopes of the vineyards maximize sun exposure, aiding in the ripening process of the Chardonnay grapes. The 2021 vintage experienced a challenging growing season, with early spring frosts and a cool, wet summer leading to lower yields. However, these conditions also contributed to the development of fresh acidity and concentrated flavors in the grapes. Bruno’s meticulous vineyard management, including careful canopy management and timely harvest decisions, ensured the production of high-quality fruit despite the climatic challenges.

Vinification & Aging Methods
Upon harvest, the Chardonnay grapes undergo a gentle pressing to extract the juice while minimizing the extraction of bitter phenolics. The must is then allowed to settle to clarify before fermentation. Fermentation occurs in oak barrels, a portion of which may be new, to impart subtle oak characteristics and enhance complexity. Bruno employs indigenous yeasts for fermentation, promoting a natural expression of the terroir. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, which softens the acidity and adds a creamy texture. Aging takes place in the same oak barrels, including those used for premier cru wines, for a period of approximately 12 months. This barrel aging allows for the integration of oak flavors and the development of additional complexity. Throughout the aging process, the wine is regularly monitored and may undergo bâtonnage, or lees stirring, to enhance mouthfeel and richness. Prior to bottling, the wine is lightly fined and filtered to ensure clarity and stability, with minimal sulfur additions to preserve its purity.

Tasting Notes
The 2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay presents a pure, clear hue with delicate green glimmers. The nose is very fresh and direct, offering attractive aromas of white fruits, including peach and citrus, underlined by stony minerality and a touch of oak. On the palate, the wine is round with a pleasant minerality and a lively finish. It is a highly expressive, seductive, and complete wine for its appellation.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its fresh acidity and minerality complement seafood dishes such as grilled salmon or seared scallops. It also pairs well with poultry dishes, particularly those with creamy sauces, as the wine’s acidity cuts through the richness. Additionally, it can be enjoyed alongside soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert, where its fruitiness and minerality provide a pleasing contrast to the creamy textures.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate the aromatic profile and freshness of this wine, it is recommended to serve it chilled at around 10-12°C (50-54°F). Using medium-sized, tulip-shaped wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas. Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes in the glass can enhance its expressive qualities.
Storage and Aging Potential
While this Bourgogne Chardonnay is approachable and enjoyable in its youth, it also has the potential for short-term aging. When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark environment with a constant temperature around 12°C (54°F) and moderate humidity—the wine can develop additional complexity over the next 3 to 5 years. Over time, expect the emergence of more nuanced flavors, including hints of honey and toasted nuts, while maintaining its core of minerality and freshness.
