Winery Background & History
Château Cantemerle, located in the Haut-Médoc appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The estate gained prominence in 1855 when it was classified as a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Grand Cru Classé) during the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification. Over the centuries, Château Cantemerle has been renowned for producing elegant and refined wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.
Producer & Winemaker
The estate is owned by the SMABTP Group, a French mutual insurance company, which has invested significantly in modernizing the vineyards and winemaking facilities. The winemaking team is dedicated to combining traditional practices with modern techniques to craft wines of exceptional quality.
Vineyard
Château Cantemerle’s vineyards cover approximately 90 hectares, planted on deep gravel soils that provide excellent drainage and contribute to the complexity of the wines. The vineyards are composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is around 30 years, and sustainable viticulture practices are employed to maintain the health of the vines and the environment.
The Wine
Château Cantemerle 2014 is a red Bordeaux blend that exemplifies the estate’s commitment to producing wines with balance, elegance, and aging potential. The 2014 vintage showcases the harmonious integration of fruit, tannins, and acidity, characteristic of the Haut-Médoc region.
Vintage
The 2014 vintage in Bordeaux experienced a challenging growing season, with a cool and wet summer followed by a warm and dry September, which allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes. The resulting wines are noted for their freshness, balance, and aromatic purity.
ABV%
The 2014 Château Cantemerle has an alcohol content of approximately 13.5%.
Vinification and Aging Method
The grapes were hand-harvested and underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats to preserve the purity of the fruit. Malolactic fermentation occurred in vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels (40% new) for 12 months. This careful vinification and aging process contributed to the wine’s complexity and structure.
Grape Varietals
The 2014 blend consists of approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, reflecting the traditional varietal composition of the estate.
Tasting Notes
• Appearance: Deep ruby color with garnet reflections.
• Nose: Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, interwoven with notes of cedar, tobacco, and subtle floral hints.
• Palate: Medium-bodied with a harmonious balance of ripe black fruits, complemented by well-integrated tannins and a touch of spice. The finish is smooth and lingering, with a pleasant freshness.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with roasted meats, such as lamb or beef, as well as game dishes and hearty stews. It also complements a variety of cheeses, including aged cheddar and Gouda.
Service Methods
• Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure.
• Decanting: Decanting for 30 minutes to an hour is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full complexity.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2014 Château Cantemerle is suitable for consumption now but can continue to develop with further cellaring. Proper storage conditions—cool, dark, and humid—will preserve its quality and allow for additional aging potential.
Scores
• Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: 90 points – “The 2014 Cantemerle has a conservative, cedar and graphite-tinged bouquet that needs to develop more fruité. It is focused but just needs more intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin on the entry. Clean red berry fruit here with moderate weight, leading to a slightly chewy finish that will hopefully evolve more nuance and personality with time. To be honest, I was expecting a little more considering the vintage.”
• James Suckling: 94 points – “I like the floral character, which highlights the aromas of currants and berries. Full body and a firm and tight center palate. Silky tannins and a savory and creamy-textured finish. A beautifully balanced red. Try in 2021, but it’s already gorgeous to taste.”
• Wine Spectator: 90 points – “Bright and racy, with red currant and plum fruit lined with a lively tang of iron that streaks through the finish. A touch taut, but should unwind nicely with modest cellaring. Best from 2018 through 2024.”
