Winery Background and History
Château Rieussec, located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a storied history dating back to the 18th century. Originally owned by the monks of the Carmes de Langon, the estate was confiscated during the French Revolution and subsequently changed hands multiple times. In 1984, it was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), who invested significantly in modernizing the vineyards and winemaking facilities. Château Rieussec is renowned for producing some of the finest sweet wines in the world, with its grand vin achieving Premier Cru Classé status in the 1855 classification. Carmes de Rieussec is the estate’s second wine, crafted with the same dedication to quality and tradition.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the ownership of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), the winemaking team at Château Rieussec is committed to producing exceptional Sauternes wines. The team employs meticulous vineyard management and state-of-the-art winemaking techniques to ensure the highest quality in both their grand vin and second wine, Carmes de Rieussec.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The vineyards of Château Rieussec are situated on gravelly soils atop clay and limestone subsoils, ideal for cultivating the grape varieties used in Sauternes wines. The 2010 vintage benefited from a very dry summer with warm days and cool nights, providing ideal conditions for the gradual and even ripening of the grapes. These conditions contributed to the development of the noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), essential for producing the rich, sweet wines characteristic of the region.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2010 Carmes de Rieussec is typically composed of a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. The exact percentages can vary depending on the vintage, but Sémillon usually dominates the blend, contributing richness and body, while Sauvignon Blanc adds acidity and freshness, and Muscadelle imparts aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
After hand-harvesting the botrytized grapes in successive passes through the vineyard, the grapes are gently pressed to extract the sweet, concentrated juice. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the fresh fruit characteristics and natural acidity of the grapes. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for a period of time to enhance complexity and integrate flavors. The wine is then bottled and undergoes further aging before release.

Tasting Notes
The 2010 Carmes de Rieussec offers a dense and rich palate with subtle honeyed notes throughout the tasting experience. It is described as delicious and fruity, with intense flavors of dried pineapple and apples. The wine is full-bodied and lightly sweet, showcasing bright acidity and a wonderful finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Sauternes pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent companion to foie gras, blue cheeses, and fruit-based desserts such as tarte tatin or apricot tart. It also complements spicy Asian cuisine, where the sweetness can offset heat and enhance complex flavors.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and richness, serve the 2010 Carmes de Rieussec slightly chilled at around 10-12°C (50-54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its aromas.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2010 Carmes de Rieussec is suitable for immediate enjoyment but also has the potential to age gracefully for several decades. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures will allow the wine to develop additional complexity over time.
