Winery Background and History
Château Rieussec, located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The estate has been owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) since 1985 and is situated at one of the highest points of Sauternes in the village of Fargues, with vineyards bordering those of Château d’Yquem. The estate’s second wine, Carmes de Rieussec, is produced with the same dedication to quality as the grand vin, offering an accessible expression of the estate’s renowned sweet wine style.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the ownership of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), the winemaking team at Château Rieussec employs meticulous vineyard management and state-of-the-art winemaking techniques to ensure the highest quality in both their grand vin and second wine, Carmes de Rieussec.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The vineyards of Château Rieussec are planted on sandy-clay gravel soils, ideal for cultivating the grape varieties used in Sauternes wines. The 2012 vintage experienced favorable conditions that allowed for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), essential for producing the rich, sweet wines characteristic of the region.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2012 Carmes de Rieussec is composed of a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. The exact percentages can vary depending on the vintage, but Sémillon usually dominates the blend, contributing richness and body, while Sauvignon Blanc adds acidity and freshness, and Muscadelle imparts aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
After hand-harvesting the botrytized grapes in successive passes through the vineyard, the grapes are gently pressed to extract the sweet, concentrated juice. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the fresh fruit characteristics and natural acidity of the grapes. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for a period of time to enhance complexity and integrate flavors. The wine is then bottled and undergoes further aging before release.

Tasting Notes
The 2012 Carmes de Rieussec presents a bouquet of white flowers, acacia, and honeysuckle. On the palate, the sweetness is present from the start with notes of honey; the wine then confirms a balanced, harmonious structure, and the moderately long finish ends with a pleasant, fairly lively expression.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Sauternes pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent companion to foie gras, blue cheeses, and fruit-based desserts such as tarte tatin or apricot tart. It also complements spicy Asian cuisine, where the sweetness can offset heat and enhance complex flavors.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and richness, serve the 2012 Carmes de Rieussec slightly chilled at around 10-12°C (50-54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its aromas.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2012 Carmes de Rieussec is suitable for immediate enjoyment but also has the potential to age gracefully for several decades. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures will allow the wine to develop additional complexity over time.
