Winery Background:

Krug Champagne was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, and it has become one of the most prestigious Champagne houses in the world. Located in Reims, Krug is known for producing complex, rich, and full-bodied Champagnes, all fermented in small oak barrels, which adds to their depth and longevity. Krug’s philosophy focuses on creating exceptional Champagne blends that transcend the nuances of individual vintages, although they do produce vintage-dated Champagne in exceptional years.

The 2008 vintage of Krug Champagne is considered a benchmark for the house, with the year itself being hailed as one of the greatest in recent Champagne history. Krug 2008 is often compared to the legendary 1996 vintage for its structure and precision, crafted from a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Golden with a fine stream of tiny, persistent bubbles.

Nose: Intense and complex aromas of citrus zest, white flowers, and orchard fruits (pear, apple). Secondary notes of honey, brioche, almonds, and subtle spices emerge as it evolves in the glass.

Palate: On the palate, Krug 2008 is vibrant and fresh with razor-sharp acidity balanced by a creamy texture. It offers layers of flavors, including lemon, grapefruit, green apple, toasted hazelnuts, and hints of chalky minerality. The finish is long and persistent, with a refined balance between freshness and richness.

Aging Potential: Krug 2008 has excellent aging potential and will continue to evolve and develop complexity over the next several decades.

Wine Pairing:

Krug 2008 pairs well with a variety of luxurious dishes, enhancing its complexity:

Shellfish: Lobster, langoustines, and scallops.

Caviar: Its acidity and complexity are perfect for balancing the richness of caviar.

Truffle-based dishes: White truffle risotto or pasta.

Poultry: Roasted chicken or guinea fowl with rich sauces.

Cheese: Aged Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano.
