Winery Background and History

Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, Maison Krug is a prestigious Champagne house renowned for its commitment to crafting exceptional champagnes. Joseph Krug’s vision was to create the best possible Champagne every year, regardless of climatic variations. This philosophy led to the creation of Krug Grande Cuvée, a blend of numerous wines from different years. Over six generations, the Krug family has upheld this tradition, ensuring each bottle reflects the house’s dedication to quality and individuality.

Producer and Winemaker

Krug remains under the stewardship of the Krug family, with Olivier Krug representing the sixth generation. The current Cellar Master, Julie Cavil, leads the winemaking team, bringing her expertise and passion to maintain the house’s legacy. Her approach emphasizes respecting the character of each plot and vintage, resulting in champagnes that express the unique story of their creation.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Krug sources grapes from various plots across the Champagne region, each contributing distinct characteristics to their blends. The 2008 vintage benefited from one of the coolest years in 14 years and the least sunny in almost half a century, providing ideal conditions for a timeless vintage. This climate allowed the grapes to mature slowly, developing a balance of structure and finesse that is evident in the final champagne.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

Vinification & Aging Methods

Each plot’s wine was fermented separately in small oak casks to preserve its unique character. After blending, the champagne underwent secondary fermentation in the bottle, followed by over ten years of aging on the lees in Krug’s cellars. This extended maturation period contributes to the champagne’s complexity, depth, and harmonious balance.

Tasting Notes

Krug 2008 exhibits an intense and brilliant golden hue. The expressive nose is rich and ample, with aromas of honey, licorice, menthol, orange peel, and grapefruit. On the palate, it is vivacious, intense, and harmonious, showcasing great tension with notes of quince, candied fruits, citrus, yellow kiwi, star fruit, honey, apple tart, butter cookies, orange peel, peony, and fennel, accompanied by floral and menthol undertones. The finish is long, balanced, and precise, with an astounding structure.

Food & Wine Pairing

Krug 2008 pairs beautifully with dishes such as oyster tartare with lobster emulsion, parmesan shortbread, pistachio Chaource in pastry sheets, rabbit terrine with sorrel, tagliatelle with mussels and basil, dishes prepared with aromatic herbs like oregano and thyme, whitefish in a lemon and pepper sauce, as well as desserts that contrast vivacity and roundness, such as passionfruit and lemon meringue.

Service Methods and Temperatures

For optimal enjoyment, serve Krug 2008 between 9°C and 12°C (48°F to 54°F). Using the Joseph glass, designed in collaboration with Riedel, can enhance the expression of the champagne’s flavors and aromas. Allowing the champagne to breathe for a few minutes before tasting can also enrich the experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

Krug champagnes are renowned for their aging potential. Properly stored in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 9°C and 12°C, Krug 2008 can develop further complexity over the next several decades, rewarding patience with deeper flavors and a more harmonious palate.
