Winery Background and History
Château Climens, often referred to as the “Lord of Barsac,” is a prestigious estate in the Barsac appellation of Bordeaux’s Sauternes region. Dating back to the 16th century, the estate has been renowned for producing exceptional sweet wines exclusively from Sémillon grapes. Under the stewardship of the Lurton family since 1971, and specifically Bérénice Lurton since 1992, Château Climens has upheld its legacy of crafting wines celebrated for their purity, elegance, and remarkable aging potential.
Producer and Winemaker
Bérénice Lurton leads the estate, emphasizing meticulous vineyard management and traditional winemaking techniques. Her dedication ensures that each vintage reflects the unique terroir of Barsac and the estate’s commitment to excellence.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The 30-hectare vineyard is planted exclusively with Sémillon vines, thriving on red clay and limestone soils. The proximity to the Garonne and Ciron rivers creates a microclimate conducive to the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), essential for producing the rich, sweet wines characteristic of the region. The 2007 vintage benefited from favorable conditions, allowing for optimal botrytis development and grape ripening.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
100% Sémillon
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes to select only those affected by noble rot. After gentle pressing, fermentation occurs in French oak barrels, with a portion being new, to enhance complexity. The wine is then aged in these barrels for approximately 20 to 24 months before bottling.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

Tasting Notes
The 2007 Château Climens boasts an ethereal bouquet of honey, white peach, apricot, and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with exquisite balance, showcasing layers of rich honeyed fruit and vibrant acidity, leading to a taut and mineral-driven finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Sauternes pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheeses, and fruit-based desserts like tarte tatin. Its sweetness also complements spicy Asian dishes, balancing heat and enhancing flavors.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve slightly chilled at 10-12°C (50-54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. Allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its aromatic profile.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2007 Château Climens is suitable for immediate enjoyment but also has the potential to age gracefully for several decades, developing additional complexity over time.
