Winery Background and History

Château Lagrange, a distinguished Third Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is situated in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Haut-Médoc region in Bordeaux, France. The estate’s history dates back to the 17th century, and it has long been recognized for producing wines of exceptional quality. In 1983, the Japanese beverage company Suntory acquired Château Lagrange, investing significantly in vineyard management and winemaking facilities. This revitalization enhanced the estate’s reputation, leading to consistent production of wines that exemplify the elegance and complexity characteristic of Saint-Julien.

Producer and Winemaker

Under Suntory’s ownership, the estate is managed by a dedicated team of viticulturists and oenologists who oversee the entire production process. Their philosophy emphasizes a harmonious blend of traditional Bordeaux practices and modern innovations, ensuring that each wine reflects the unique terroir of Château Lagrange.

Vineyards and Microclimate

Château Lagrange’s vineyards span approximately 118 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The estate’s location on two Günzian gravel slopes provides excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure, essential for the cultivation of high-quality grapes. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, creating a favorable microclimate that reduces the risk of frost and promotes even ripening. The 2013 growing season presented challenges, including a cool spring and early summer, which delayed flowering and led to uneven fruit set. However, favorable conditions in late summer and early autumn allowed for the development of balanced fruit, resulting in a wine that reflects the estate’s commitment to quality.

Grape Varietals

The 2013 vintage is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Harvesting was conducted manually from September 30 to October 14, 2013, to ensure the selection of optimal fruit. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with each plot vinified separately to preserve the distinct characteristics of the terroir. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation to enhance complexity and stability. Aging occurred in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, allowing for gradual maturation and integration of flavors. After bottling, the wine was further refined before release, ensuring it reached the consumer in optimal condition.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
