Winery Background and History
Château Lanessan, located in the Haut-Médoc appellation of Bordeaux, France, has been under the stewardship of the Bouteiller family since the 18th century, spanning eight generations. The estate encompasses 80 hectares, with 42 hectares dedicated to vineyards planted on deep Garonne gravel soils. This terroir, combined with the family’s commitment to traditional winemaking practices, has established Château Lanessan as a producer of classic Bordeaux wines that offer both quality and value.
Producer and Winemaker
In August 2009, Paz Espejo assumed the role of director at Château Lanessan, marking a significant commitment by the Bouteiller family to the property’s future. Under her leadership, the estate continues to honor its heritage while integrating modern techniques to enhance wine quality and meet contemporary consumer expectations.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The vineyards of Château Lanessan are situated in a single contiguous plot, benefiting from deep Garonne gravel soils atop a gravelly and clayey subsoil. This composition provides excellent drainage and heat retention, fostering optimal ripening conditions for the vines. The proximity to the Gironde estuary contributes to a temperate microclimate, reducing frost risk and promoting consistent grape maturation. The 2012 growing season presented challenges, including a cool spring and early summer, leading to delayed flowering and uneven fruit set. However, favorable weather in late summer allowed for the development of balanced fruit, resulting in a wine that reflects the estate’s dedication to quality.
Grape Varietals
The 2012 Château Lanessan is a Bordeaux blend, predominantly featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Petit Verdot.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvesting was conducted mechanically at optimal ripeness, followed by sorting with optical screening equipment to ensure only the best fruit proceeded to vinification. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with each plot vinified separately to preserve the unique characteristics of the terroir. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation to enhance complexity and stability. Aging took place in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, allowing for gradual maturation and integration of flavors. After bottling, the wine was further refined before release, ensuring it reached consumers in optimal condition.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
Approximately 13%.
