Winery Background and History


Château Léoville Poyferré, located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France, is a distinguished Second Growth estate classified in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate’s origins trace back to the large Léoville estate, which was divided during the French Revolution, resulting in the creation of Léoville Poyferré, among others. Since 1920, the Cuvelier family has owned the château, dedicating themselves to producing wines that exemplify the elegance and complexity characteristic of Saint-Julien. Over the years, significant investments in vineyard management and winemaking facilities have elevated the estate’s reputation on the global stage.


Producer and Winemaker


As of the 2011 vintage, Château Léoville Poyferré was under the direction of Didier Cuvelier, a member of the owning family, who took charge in 1979. Under his leadership, the estate embraced modern winemaking techniques while respecting traditional practices. In 2011, the harvested grapes underwent meticulous sorting to ensure only the finest fruit was used. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing for precise control over the process. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 18 to 20 months. This aging process allowed the wine to develop complexity and integrate the oak nuances harmoniously.
