Winery Background and History

Château Phélan Ségur, located in the esteemed Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France, was established in the early 19th century by Irishman Bernard Phélan. He combined two estates, Clos de Garramey and Domaine Ségur de Cabanac, to form Château Phélan Ségur. Over the years, the estate has been recognized for producing wines that exemplify the robust yet refined character typical of Saint-Estèphe.

Producer and Winemaker

As of the 2014 vintage, Château Phélan Ségur was under the ownership of the Gardinier family, who had managed the estate since 1985. The winemaking team focused on integrating traditional Bordeaux practices with modern innovations to enhance wine quality and express the unique terroir of the estate.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The estate’s vineyards span approximately 70 hectares, situated on well-drained gravel and clay soils typical of Saint-Estèphe. This composition provides optimal conditions for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, reducing the risk of frost and promoting a favorable microclimate for vine growth. In 2014, the estate introduced a new vat room with small volumes of 40 to 60 hectoliters, allowing for more precise vinification and selection processes.

Grape Varietals

64% Cabernet Sauvignon

36% Merlot

Vinification & Aging Methods

In 2014, Château Phélan Ségur implemented precision viticulture techniques, including detailed assessments of vine vigor, to enhance grape quality. The introduction of a new vat room with smaller vats facilitated meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation to soften acidity. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, to impart complexity and structure.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2014 Château Phélan Ségur has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of approximately 13.5%.

Tasting Notes

The 2014 Château Phélan Ségur presents a deep garnet color. The nose reveals aromas of crushed plum and black currant, complemented by notes of espresso and singed sandalwood. On the palate, it offers a velvety texture with rich fruit flavors, supported by firm tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is lingering, with subtle hints of spice and minerality.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs well with roasted meats, such as lamb or beef, and hearty stews. Its structure and depth complement rich dishes, making it suitable for gourmet meals. Additionally, it harmonizes with aged cheeses, particularly those with a firm texture and pronounced flavor.

Service Methods and Temperatures

It is recommended to decant the 2014 Château Phélan Ségur for about an hour before serving to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic profile. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F) to fully appreciate its complexity and balance.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2014 vintage of Château Phélan Ségur is suitable for aging and is expected to develop further complexity over the next 10-15 years. Proper cellaring conditions, with a consistent temperature of around 12-15°C (54-59°F) and humidity levels of 70-75%, will ensure the wine matures gracefully.
