Winery Background and History
Château Pontet-Canet, located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France, traces its origins to 1725 when Jean-François de Pontet, a royal governor, established the vineyard. In 1855, it was classified as a Fifth Growth in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification. The Tesseron family acquired the estate in 1975, ushering in significant improvements in vineyard management and winemaking techniques. Notably, Pontet-Canet is among the few biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Médoc, reflecting a commitment to sustainable and organic practices.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the stewardship of Alfred Tesseron, Château Pontet-Canet has elevated its reputation, producing wines that rival higher-classified estates. The estate’s dedication to biodynamic farming and meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and cellar have been instrumental in crafting wines of exceptional quality.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate encompasses approximately 81 hectares, planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The vineyards are situated on deep gravel soils, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the distinctive character of the wines. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, creating a favorable microclimate that enhances grape ripening and overall vineyard health.
Grape Varietals
The 2006 vintage is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvesting was conducted manually to ensure optimal fruit selection. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with each plot vinified separately to preserve the unique characteristics of the terroir. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation to enhance complexity and stability. Aging took place in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, allowing for gradual maturation and integration of flavors. After bottling, the wine was further refined before release, ensuring it reached the consumer in optimal condition.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
Approximately 13%.
