Winery Background and History
Château Rauzan-Gassies, located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a storied history dating back to the 17th century. Originally part of the larger Rauzan estate, it was divided in 1763, leading to the creation of Rauzan-Gassies. The estate was classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, cementing its reputation for quality. In 1946, the property was acquired by the Quié family, who have since been dedicated to preserving its legacy while implementing modern viticultural practices.
Producer and Winemaker
As of the 2014 vintage, Château Rauzan-Gassies was under the stewardship of the Quié family, with Jean-Michel Quié overseeing operations. The winemaking team focused on traditional Bordeaux methods, emphasizing the expression of the Margaux terroir through meticulous vineyard management and careful vinification processes.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate’s vineyards encompass approximately 28 hectares, situated on the renowned gravelly soils of Margaux. These well-draining soils are ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the primary grape varieties of the estate. The proximity to the Gironde estuary provides a moderating influence on the climate, reducing temperature extremes and promoting a long, even ripening period. This microclimate contributes to the development of complex aromatics and the elegant structure characteristic of Rauzan-Gassies wines.
Grape Varietals
The 2014 Château Rauzan-Gassies is a blend of classic Bordeaux varietals, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2014 vintage underwent traditional vinification processes. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve the purity of fruit flavors. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels, with approximately 30% being new oak, for an average of 12 months. This aging process imparts complexity and structure to the wine, allowing it to develop its characteristic elegance and depth.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2014 vintage has an alcohol content of approximately 13%.
Tasting Notes
The 2014 Château Rauzan-Gassies presents a medium-bodied profile with chewy tannins on the entry. The palate is a little angular, with some hardness on the finish. The bouquet offers light grassy notes and undergrowth aromas, though it may lack the fruit intensity found in some of its peers.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with roasted meats, particularly lamb and beef, as well as game dishes. Its balanced acidity and refined tannins complement the richness of these foods, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to decant the wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving to allow it to fully express its aromas and flavors. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under proper conditions—away from light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with appropriate humidity—this wine has the potential to develop further complexity over the next several years. It is suitable for consumption now but can be cellared to enhance its tertiary characteristics.
