Winery Background and History
Château Rieussec, located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a storied history dating back to the 18th century. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, the estate has long been recognized for producing exceptional sweet wines. In 1984, Château Rieussec was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), ushering in a new era of investment and quality improvements. The estate spans approximately 93 hectares, primarily planted with Sémillon, along with smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the ownership of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), the winemaking team at Château Rieussec is dedicated to traditional methods, emphasizing meticulous vineyard management and careful selection during harvest to ensure the production of high-quality sweet wines that reflect the unique terroir of Sauternes.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The vineyards of Château Rieussec are situated on gravelly soils with a mix of clay and limestone, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the complexity of the wines. The proximity to the Garonne and Ciron rivers creates morning mists followed by warm afternoons, ideal conditions for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), essential for producing the rich, sweet wines characteristic of the region. The 2016 vintage experienced favorable weather conditions, allowing for optimal ripening and concentration of flavors.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2016 Château Rieussec is a blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% Muscadelle. This composition contributes to the wine’s complexity, with Sémillon providing richness and body, Sauvignon Blanc adding freshness and aromatic lift, and Muscadelle imparting floral notes.
Vinification & Aging Methods
After hand-harvesting in multiple passes to select grapes affected by noble rot, the grapes are gently pressed to extract the concentrated juice. Fermentation occurs in French oak barrels, with a significant portion being new oak, to enhance complexity and structure. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in these barrels for about 18 to 24 months before bottling.

Tasting Notes
The 2016 Château Rieussec presents a pale lemon color. On the nose, it offers a beautiful floral and citrus perfume of orange blossom, pink grapefruit, yuzu, lime leaves, lemongrass, and fallen leaves, with hints of nutmeg and candied ginger. The palate reveals loads of elegant, tightly wound layers and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Sauternes pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheeses, and fruit-based desserts such as tarte Tatin or apricot tart. Its sweetness and acidity also complement spicy Asian cuisine, where the wine’s richness can balance the heat and enhance the flavors.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and richness, serve the 2016 Château Rieussec slightly chilled at around 10-12°C (50-54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. Allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its aromas.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2016 Château Rieussec is suitable for immediate enjoyment but also has the potential to age gracefully for several decades. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures will allow the wine to develop additional complexity over time.
