Winery Background & History

Château Lascombes, one of Margaux’s most distinguished estates, has a legacy dating back to the 17th century. Named after its founder, Antoine Chevalier de Lascombes, it has been producing high-quality Bordeaux wines for centuries. The estate was classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, cementing its reputation for excellence.

Producer & Winemaker

Under the stewardship of modern owners, Château Lascombes has undergone significant advancements. The technical director, Dominique Befve, oversees the winemaking process, ensuring that both the flagship wine and the second label, Chevalier de Lascombes, reflect the estate’s commitment to quality.

Vineyard

The 120-hectare vineyard is planted on diverse soils of gravel, clay, and limestone, contributing to the wine’s complexity. The vines average 35 years of age, with sustainable practices ensuring the vineyard’s longevity. The varietal composition is 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot, typical of the Margaux terroir.

The Wine

Chevalier de Lascombes is the estate’s second wine, crafted from younger vines or parcels not selected for the Grand Vin. It is designed to offer a more accessible expression of the estate’s style, retaining elegance and balance.

Vintage

The 2014 vintage began with a challenging, cool summer but was saved by a warm, dry September that allowed for excellent ripening. The vintage is characterized by freshness, aromatic purity, and fine balance.

ABV%

The wine has an alcohol content of 13.5%.

Vinification and Aging Method

The grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel vats to preserve their purity. Malolactic fermentation was followed by aging in French oak barrels (50% new) for 16 months, enhancing structure and complexity.

Grape Varietals

The 2014 blend includes 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep ruby with garnet reflections.

Nose: Aromas of blackberries, cherries, and plums, layered with cocoa, spices, and delicate floral notes.

Palate: Medium-bodied with a rich mid-palate of ripe fruits, smooth tannins, and a subtle oak influence. The finish is refined, with a lingering freshness.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with roasted lamb, grilled beef, game dishes, and hearty stews. It also complements aged cheeses such as Gouda or Comté.

Service Methods

Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F).

Decanting: Decant for 30 minutes to 1 hour before serving to allow the wine to open up.

Storage and Aging Potential

Chevalier de Lascombes 2014 is ready to enjoy now but will continue to develop gracefully for the next 5–8 years under proper storage conditions.
