Winery Background and History

Clos Henri is the Marlborough estate of the esteemed Sancerre winemaking family, Famille Bourgeois. After a 12-year global search for the ideal terroir to cultivate Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, the family established Clos Henri in New Zealand’s Wairau Valley in 2000. This venture marries their deep-rooted French winemaking heritage with the distinctive terroir of Marlborough, resulting in wines that reflect both traditions.

Producer and Winemaker

Clos Henri is managed by the Bourgeois family, who have been producing wine in Sancerre for ten generations. Their expertise and commitment to organic practices are evident in the wines they produce. The winemaking team focuses on expressing the unique characteristics of their Marlborough vineyards while honoring their French heritage.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The estate spans 109 hectares and encompasses three distinct soil types: glacial stones, Broadridge clay, and Wither clay. These diverse soils contribute to the complexity and depth of their wines. The cool maritime climate of the Wairau Valley, with its sunny days and cool nights, allows for a long growing season, enhancing the aromatic qualities and acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

Grape Varietals and Percentage Used

The Clos Henri Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is crafted exclusively from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

Vinification and Aging Methods

The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo gentle pressing. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of fruit flavors. The wine then ages on its fine lees for several months, with regular lees stirring to enhance texture and complexity. This approach results in a Sauvignon Blanc that balances vibrant fruit characteristics with a refined mouthfeel.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The Clos Henri Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2023 has an ABV of approximately 13%.

Tasting Notes

This Sauvignon Blanc presents a bright, fresh profile reminiscent of Sancerre. Aromas of passionfruit, lemongrass, and capsicum lead to a weighty palate with an appealing texture. The wine offers a perfect sweet-sour balance that drives a lengthy finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

The vibrant acidity and aromatic profile of this Sauvignon Blanc make it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs particularly well with ceviche, Thai green curry, and tomato and goat’s cheese tart. The wine’s freshness complements the flavors of seafood and the spiciness of Asian cuisine, while its acidity balances the richness of creamy dishes.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and crisp acidity, serve the Clos Henri Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2023 chilled at around 8-10°C (46-50°F). Use a white wine glass with a narrow bowl to concentrate the aromas.

Storage and Aging Potential

While this Sauvignon Blanc is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it can develop additional complexity over 2-3 years. Store bottles in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature to preserve its freshness and vibrancy.
