Winery Background and History
Colterenzio, established in 1960 in South Tyrol’s Alto Adige region, is a cooperative winery comprising over 300 family-run vineyards. The winery is renowned for its commitment to quality and sustainability, producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. The “St. Daniel” line showcases their dedication to crafting exceptional single-varietal wines.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Colterenzio focuses on minimal intervention and sustainable practices. They employ a combination of traditional methods and modern technology to ensure the expression of the region’s distinct terroir in each bottle. Their collaborative approach with the member growers ensures consistency and quality across their wine portfolio.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for the St. Daniel Pinot Nero Riserva are sourced from vineyards situated at altitudes between 350 to 450 meters above sea level. These sites feature volcanic soils with morainal deposits, providing excellent drainage and mineral content. The cool climate, characterized by significant diurnal temperature variations, allows for slow ripening, preserving the grape’s acidity and enhancing aromatic complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods
After destemming and gentle pressing, the must undergoes a brief cold maceration. Fermentation occurs over 14 days at a controlled temperature of 25°C. The wine is then aged for 12 months, with two-thirds maturing in large 35-hectoliter casks and one-third in barriques, allowing for malolactic fermentation. Following barrel aging, the wine spends an additional 12 months refining in the bottle before release.

Tasting Notes
The 2021 St. Daniel Pinot Nero Riserva presents a medium-intense garnet red color. On the nose, it offers a seductive bouquet of cherries, damsons, red fruits, and a hint of cinnamon. The palate is medium-rich, supple, and luscious, featuring flavors of black and red berries complemented by velvety tannins and subtle oak spice nuances.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with delicately flavored starters, charcuterie, veal escallops in ginger sauce, roast partridge, seared duck with plum glaze, and meaty fish dishes. Its balanced acidity and elegant structure enhance the flavors of these dishes without overpowering them.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and texture, serve the St. Daniel Pinot Nero Riserva at a cool temperature of 16°C. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its expressive bouquet. Using a Burgundy-style glass will help concentrate the aromas and deliver the wine to the palate effectively.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions—consistent temperature around 12°C, moderate humidity, and away from direct light—the 2021 St. Daniel Pinot Nero Riserva has a cellaring potential of 6 to 8 years. Over time, the wine is expected to develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes emerging to complement its existing fruit and spice profile.
