Winery Background and History
Château d’Issan, a distinguished Third Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is situated in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Its origins trace back to the 12th century, with historical records indicating that its wines were served at royal courts, including the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Henry II of England in 1152. The château’s motto, “Regum Mensis Aris Que Deorum,” translates to “For the tables of kings and the altars of gods,” reflecting its esteemed heritage. Over the centuries, Château d’Issan has maintained a reputation for producing elegant and refined wines that exemplify the unique terroir of Margaux.
Producer and Winemaker
Château d’Issan is owned by the Cruse family, who have been stewards of the estate since 1945. Emmanuel Cruse, a member of the family, oversees the estate’s operations, ensuring that traditional winemaking practices are upheld while embracing modern techniques to enhance quality. The winemaking team is dedicated to crafting wines that express the distinct characteristics of the Margaux terroir, focusing on precision and balance.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate’s vineyards cover approximately 53 hectares, planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, along with small parcels of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Situated on the gravelly soils typical of the Médoc region, the vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and heat retention, which are ideal for ripening these grape varieties. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, providing a favorable microclimate that reduces the risk of frost and promotes even ripening. Sustainable viticultural practices are employed to preserve soil health and biodiversity, ensuring the longevity of the vineyards and the quality of the fruit.

Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2005 vintage benefited from favorable weather conditions, leading to optimal ripeness and concentration. Harvesting was conducted manually to ensure careful selection of the best fruit. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and enhance mouthfeel. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 18 months. This aging process contributed to the development of complex aromas and flavors, as well as the integration of tannins, resulting in a wine with depth and elegance.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2005 Château d’Issan has an alcohol content of 13.5%.
