Winery Background and History

Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut is a family-owned estate located in Chambolle-Musigny, within the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy, France. The Sigaut family has been cultivating vines in this prestigious area for several generations, focusing primarily on Pinot Noir from their holdings in Chambolle-Musigny. In recent years, they have expanded their portfolio to include select Chardonnay vineyards in the Côte de Beaune, including the esteemed Les Enseignères parcel in Puligny-Montrachet. Their winemaking philosophy emphasizes traditional methods, minimal intervention, and a deep respect for the terroir, resulting in wines that authentically express their origins.

Producer and Winemaker

The estate is managed by Anne and Hervé Sigaut, who share responsibilities in both the vineyard and the cellar. Hervé oversees the viticultural practices, ensuring that the vines are tended with care and in harmony with the environment. Anne manages the winemaking process, focusing on gentle extraction techniques and careful aging to preserve the purity and elegance of the wines. Together, they strive to produce wines that reflect the unique characteristics of each vineyard site.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Les Enseignères vineyard is situated in the Puligny-Montrachet appellation of the Côte de Beaune. Notably, Les Enseignères lies directly below the Grand Cru vineyards of Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, making it one of the most esteemed village-level sites in Puligny-Montrachet. The vines in this parcel are approximately 70 years old, contributing to the complexity and depth of the wine produced. The 2022 growing season was characterized by a hot and dry summer, which, combined with the age of the vines, resulted in concentrated fruit with excellent ripeness and balance.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

100% Chardonnay

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes are hand-harvested to ensure optimal quality and are sorted meticulously upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation is carried out in oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, to impart subtle complexity and structure. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and add richness. Aging continues in barrel for approximately 12 months, allowing the wine to develop depth and integrate flavors harmoniously.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères Vieilles Vignes displays a pale lemon color with a bright, clear appearance. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe apple, pear, and white flowers, intertwined with subtle notes of vanilla and toasted almonds from the oak aging. The palate is elegant and well-balanced, featuring a harmonious blend of fruit and minerality, with a creamy texture and a long, refreshing finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This refined Chardonnay pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its complexity and balance make it an excellent companion to seafood, particularly shellfish like scallops or lobster, as well as poultry dishes in creamy sauces. It also complements soft cheeses such as Brie or Camembert. For a delightful pairing, consider serving it alongside a roasted chicken with herbs or a creamy mushroom risotto.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of this wine, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 12-14°C (54-57°F). Using medium-sized white wine glasses will allow the aromas to concentrate and enhance the tasting experience. Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can help open up its aromatic profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2022 Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères Vieilles Vignes has the potential to age gracefully for 5 to 10 years. When stored in proper cellar conditions—cool, dark, and with stable temperatures—the wine will develop additional complexity, with its flavors evolving towards richer, more nuanced expressions.
