Winery Background and History

Domaine Aurélien Verdet is a family-owned estate located in the heart of Burgundy, France. Established in the mid-20th century, the domaine has been committed to organic viticulture since its inception, making it one of the pioneers of organic winemaking in the region. Aurélien Verdet, the current proprietor and winemaker, took over the estate from his father and has continued the tradition of producing high-quality wines that express the unique terroirs of Burgundy. The domaine’s holdings include parcels in several prestigious appellations, with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals.

Producer and Winemaker

Aurélien Verdet, a passionate advocate for organic farming, manages both the vineyards and the winemaking process at the domaine. His approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and the terroir to shine through in the wines. Verdet’s dedication to sustainable practices and his meticulous attention to detail have earned the estate a reputation for producing elegant and expressive Burgundy wines.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes 2015 is sourced from old vines situated in the Vosne-Romanée appellation, renowned for its exceptional Pinot Noir wines. The vineyards benefit from a continental climate, characterized by warm summers and cool winters, with well-draining limestone and clay soils that contribute to the complexity and finesse of the wines. The 2015 growing season was marked by favorable conditions, including a warm and dry summer, leading to an early harvest of ripe and healthy grapes.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

This wine is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir, the signature red grape varietal of Burgundy.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The hand-harvested grapes undergo a careful sorting process to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the purity of the fruit flavors. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, for approximately 12 to 15 months. This aging process imparts subtle oak nuances and enhances the wine’s structure and complexity.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2015 vintage has an alcohol content of approximately 13%.

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Aurélien Verdet Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes displays a deep ruby color. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe red cherries, raspberries, and subtle floral notes, complemented by hints of spice and earth. The palate is medium-bodied, with a harmonious balance between vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins. Flavors of red berries persist, leading to a long, elegant finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, duck confit, and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms. Its acidity and tannin structure also complement creamy cheeses and charcuterie.

Service Methods and Temperatures

For optimal enjoyment, serve the wine slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes prior to serving can help to open up the aromas and flavors.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under proper conditions—away from light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with appropriate humidity—this wine has the potential to develop further complexity over the next 5 to 10 years. It is suitable for consumption now but can be cellared to enhance its tertiary characteristics.
