Winery Background and History

Domaine Henri Gouges, established in 1920, is a renowned family-owned estate located in the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits region. The domaine has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Nuits-Saint-Georges wines, focusing exclusively on Pinot Noir. Over the decades, the Gouges family has maintained a commitment to traditional viticulture and winemaking practices, ensuring the expression of the unique terroir in their wines.

Producer and Winemaker

As of the 2013 vintage, the domaine was managed by the third generation of the Gouges family, with Christian and Pierre Gouges at the helm. Their approach emphasizes low yields, meticulous vineyard management, and minimal intervention in the cellar to produce wines that are true to their origins.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Domaine Henri Gouges’ vineyards are situated in Nuits-Saint-Georges, encompassing approximately 14 hectares, including several Premier Cru sites. The soils here are predominantly limestone mixed with clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the structure and minerality of the wines. The 2013 growing season in Burgundy was challenging, with a cool and wet spring leading to delayed flowering and reduced yields. However, a warm summer followed, allowing the grapes to achieve phenolic ripeness while retaining acidity, resulting in wines with freshness and balance.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The 2013 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The hand-harvested grapes undergo rigorous sorting to ensure only the healthiest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, utilizing natural yeasts. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 18 months. This process imparts complexity and allows for the integration of tannins, contributing to the wine’s aging potential.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2013 vintage has an alcohol content of approximately 13%.

Tasting Notes

The 2013 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges exhibits aromas of red currant and cherries, with high acidity and firm tannins. On the palate, the wine is pure and full-bodied, with complex flavors and a tangy acidity that provides laser-like focus.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs well with roasted game birds, such as duck or quail, as well as dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or truffles. Its acidity and tannic structure complement rich, savory flavors, making it a suitable match for hearty meat dishes and aged cheeses.

Service Methods and Temperatures

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving to allow it to open up. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F).

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under proper conditions—away from light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with appropriate humidity—this wine can develop further complexity over the next 5 to 10 years. It is suitable for consumption now but will benefit from additional cellaring.
