Winery Background and History

Weingut Dr. Wehrheim is a family-owned estate located in Birkweiler, in Germany’s Pfalz region. The estate cultivates approximately 17 hectares of vineyards, focusing on Riesling (35%), Pinot varieties (35%), and other traditional grapes. The winery is renowned for its commitment to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards.

Producer and Winemaker

The Wehrheim family has been producing wine for multiple generations, with a focus on sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking to express the purity and complexity of their vineyard sites.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Birkweiler Kastanienbusch vineyard is situated west of Birkweiler, comprising a natural basin protected from cold air currents by surrounding hills. The vineyards are located up to 320 meters above sea level, with slopes reaching inclinations of up to 30%. The soil is characterized by “Rotliegendes,” a red slate composition that imparts a distinctive minerality to the wines.

100% Riesling

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous sorting. After destemming, the grapes undergo a maceration period of at least 24 hours before pressing. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by aging on fine lees until April. The wine is typically bottled in July or August.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Kastanienbusch Riesling Großes Gewächs presents a pale straw hue with greenish reflections. The nose is expressive, offering herbal aromas typical of the Rotliegendes soil, complemented by citrus notes such as lemon and mandarin. On the palate, the wine is concentrated with a firm grip, displaying a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. The finish is long and mineral-driven, indicating excellent aging potential.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Riesling pairs well with poultry, seafood, fish, and pasta dishes with light sauces or herbs. Its expressive character also allows it to complement light, steamed meats.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and crispness, serve this Riesling well-chilled at around 8-11°C (46-52°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. This temperature accentuates the wine’s freshness and allows its nuanced aromas to shine. It’s recommended to open the bottle shortly before serving to preserve its delicate aromatics.

Storage and Aging Potential

While this Riesling is enjoyable upon release, displaying vibrant fruit flavors and crisp acidity, it also has the potential to develop additional complexity with cellaring. When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures, it can be enjoyed over the next 5 to 7 years, during which it may develop richer textures and more integrated flavors.
