Winery Background and History

Château Duhart-Milon, a distinguished Fourth Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Established in the early 18th century, the estate has undergone various ownership changes, with the Rothschild family acquiring it in 1962. Under their stewardship, significant investments were made to improve vineyard management and winemaking techniques, elevating the quality and reputation of Château Duhart-Milon’s wines. The estate is renowned for producing classic Pauillac wines that embody elegance, structure, and longevity.

Producer and Winemaker

Château Duhart-Milon is managed by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), with Charles Chevallier serving as the technical director during the 2001 vintage. The winemaking team focuses on traditional Bordeaux methods, emphasizing meticulous vineyard practices and precise vinification to express the unique terroir of Pauillac.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The estate’s vineyards cover approximately 76 hectares, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Situated on gravelly soils typical of the Médoc region, the vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and heat retention, which are ideal for ripening these grape varieties. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, providing a favorable microclimate that reduces the risk of frost and promotes even ripening. Sustainable viticultural practices are employed to preserve soil health and biodiversity, ensuring the longevity of the vineyards and the quality of the fruit.

Grape Varietals

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2001 vintage experienced favorable weather conditions, leading to optimal ripeness and concentration. Harvesting was conducted manually to ensure careful selection of the best fruit. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and enhance mouthfeel. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 14 to 16 months. This aging process contributed to the development of complex aromas and flavors, as well as the integration of tannins, resulting in a wine with depth and elegance.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
