Winery Background and History

Château Duhart-Milon, a distinguished Fourth Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Established in the early 18th century, the estate has undergone various ownership changes, with the Rothschild family acquiring it in 1962. Under their stewardship, significant investments were made to improve vineyard management and winemaking techniques, elevating the quality and reputation of Château Duhart-Milon’s wines. The estate is renowned for producing classic Pauillac wines that embody elegance, structure, and longevity.

Producer and Winemaker

Château Duhart-Milon is managed by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), with Charles Chevallier serving as the technical director during the 2002 vintage. The winemaking team focuses on traditional Bordeaux methods, emphasizing meticulous vineyard practices and precise vinification to express the unique terroir of Pauillac.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The estate’s vineyards cover approximately 76 hectares, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Situated on gravelly soils typical of the Médoc region, the vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and heat retention, which are ideal for ripening these grape varieties. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, providing a favorable microclimate that reduces the risk of frost and promotes even ripening. Sustainable viticultural practices are employed to preserve soil health and biodiversity, ensuring the longevity of the vineyards and the quality of the fruit.

Grape Varietals

The 2002 vintage of Château Duhart-Milon is composed of:

70% Cabernet Sauvignon

30% Merlot

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2002 vintage presented challenges due to unpredictable weather, including frequent rain showers. However, meticulous vineyard management and precise harvesting allowed for the selection of quality fruit. Harvesting was conducted manually to ensure careful selection of the best grapes. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and enhance mouthfeel. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 14 to 16 months. This aging process contributed to the development of complex aromas and flavors, as well as the integration of tannins, resulting in a wine with depth and elegance.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2002 Château Duhart-Milon has an alcohol content of 12.5%.

Tasting Notes

The 2002 Château Duhart-Milon displays a medium to deep ruby-red color. The nose offers classic ‘claret’ aromas with notes of pencil shavings and dust overlying slightly leafy cassis fruit. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with firm, silky tannins and balanced acidity, leading to a medium finish. This wine showcases the elegance and structure characteristic of Pauillac wines.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, and game dishes. It also complements rich stews and aged cheeses, where its structure and depth enhance the dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the 2002 Château Duhart-Milon at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully express its aromatic profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under optimal conditions, the 2002 Château Duhart-Milon has the potential to develop further complexity over the next decade, with a peak drinking window extending through 2025.
