Winery Background and History
Château Gloria, located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, was established in the 1940s by Henri Martin. Unlike many classified estates, Château Gloria was assembled parcel by parcel, acquiring plots from neighboring classified growths. This unique approach has allowed the estate to cultivate a distinctive identity within the region. Today, it remains under the stewardship of the Martin family, upholding a tradition of producing high-quality wines that reflect the esteemed terroir of Saint-Julien.
Producer and Winemaker
The estate is managed by the Martin family, with a dedicated team overseeing both vineyard and cellar operations. Their commitment to traditional Bordeaux winemaking techniques, combined with modern innovations, ensures that each vintage expresses the unique characteristics of the terroir.
Vineyards and Microclimate
Château Gloria’s vineyards span approximately 50 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Situated on Garonne gravel soils, the vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and heat retention, ideal for ripening these grape varieties. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, providing a favorable microclimate that reduces frost risk and promotes even ripening. Sustainable viticultural practices are employed to preserve soil health and biodiversity, ensuring the longevity of the vineyards and the quality of the fruit.
Grape Varietals
The 2013 vintage of Château Gloria is composed of:
• Cabernet Sauvignon
• Merlot
• Cabernet Franc
• Petit Verdot
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2013 growing season presented challenges, including a cool spring and a wet summer, leading to uneven ripening. However, meticulous vineyard management and selective harvesting ensured quality fruit. Harvesting was conducted manually to ensure careful selection of the best grapes. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and enhance mouthfeel. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 14 months. This aging process contributed to the development of complex aromas and flavors, as well as the integration of tannins, resulting in a wine with depth and elegance.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2013 Château Gloria has an alcohol content of approximately 13%.
