Winery Background and History

Château Gloria, located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, was established in the 1940s by Henri Martin. Unlike many estates with centuries-old histories, Château Gloria was meticulously assembled parcel by parcel, acquiring plots from neighboring classified growths. This unique approach has allowed the estate to cultivate a distinctive identity within the region. Today, it remains under the stewardship of the Martin family, upholding a tradition of producing high-quality wines that reflect the esteemed terroir of Saint-Julien.

Producer and Winemaker

The estate is managed by the Martin family, with a dedicated team overseeing both vineyard and cellar operations. Their commitment to traditional Bordeaux winemaking techniques, combined with modern innovations, ensures that each vintage expresses the unique characteristics of the terroir.

Vineyards and Microclimate

Château Gloria’s vineyards span approximately 50 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Situated on Garonne gravel soils, the vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and heat retention, ideal for ripening these grape varieties. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, providing a favorable microclimate that reduces frost risk and promotes even ripening. Sustainable viticultural practices are employed to preserve soil health and biodiversity, ensuring the longevity of the vineyards and the quality of the fruit.

Grape Varietals

The 2016 vintage of Château Gloria is composed of:

60% Cabernet Sauvignon

30% Merlot

7% Cabernet Franc

3% Petit Verdot

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2016 growing season was marked by a wet spring followed by a warm, dry summer, leading to optimal ripening conditions. Harvesting was conducted manually between September 29 and October 17, ensuring careful selection of the best grapes. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and enhance mouthfeel. The wine was then aged for approximately 14 months in French oak barrels, with about 42% being new oak, imparting complexity and integrating tannins.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2016 Château Gloria has an alcohol content of approximately 13.5%.

Tasting Notes

The 2016 Château Gloria exhibits a deep garnet-purple color. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of plum preserves, warm cassis, and dark chocolate, complemented by touches of tobacco, bay leaves, and lavender. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, elegant, and savory, with layers of flavor and a lifted finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, and game dishes. It also complements rich stews and aged cheeses, where its structure and depth enhance the dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the 2016 Château Gloria at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully express its aromatic profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under optimal conditions, the 2016 Château Gloria has the potential to develop further complexity over the next two decades, with a peak drinking window extending from 2024 through 2036.
