Winery Background and History
Château Grand-Pontet, a Grand Cru Classé estate, is situated in the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. The estate’s history dates back several centuries, with its vineyards benefiting from the region’s renowned terroir. In 1980, the Bécot family, proprietors of the neighboring Château Beau-Séjour Bécot, acquired Château Grand-Pontet. Under their stewardship, the estate has focused on producing wines that exemplify the elegance and complexity characteristic of Saint-Émilion.
Producer and Winemaker
Managed by the Bécot family, Château Grand-Pontet benefits from their extensive experience in viticulture and winemaking. The team employs a combination of traditional Bordeaux techniques and modern innovations to craft wines that reflect the unique attributes of their vineyards.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate’s vineyards cover approximately 14 hectares, planted predominantly with Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Situated on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, the vineyards benefit from well-drained soils and a favorable microclimate. The proximity to the Dordogne River moderates temperatures, reducing frost risk and promoting even ripening. Sustainable viticultural practices are employed to maintain soil health and biodiversity, ensuring the longevity and quality of the vineyards.
Grape Varietals
The 2014 vintage of Château Grand-Pontet is composed of:
• Merlot
• Cabernet Franc
• Cabernet Sauvignon
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2014 growing season presented challenges, including a cool summer followed by a warm and dry September, allowing for optimal ripening. Harvesting was conducted manually to ensure the selection of the best fruit. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and enhance mouthfeel. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 12 to 18 months. This aging process contributed to the development of complex aromas and flavors, as well as the integration of tannins, resulting in a wine with depth and elegance.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2014 Château Grand-Pontet has an alcohol content of approximately 13.5%.
