Winery Background and History
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, a Fifth Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The estate’s history dates back to the 16th century, with the name “Grand-Puy” referring to its elevated position on a “puy” or hillock. Over the centuries, the château has been owned by various families, each contributing to its legacy. In 1978, the Borie family acquired the estate, ushering in a period of significant renovation and investment in both the vineyards and winemaking facilities. This commitment to quality has solidified Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste’s reputation for producing classic Pauillac wines that embody elegance, structure, and longevity.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the stewardship of François-Xavier Borie, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste has maintained a focus on traditional winemaking practices complemented by modern techniques. The winemaking team is dedicated to expressing the unique terroir of the estate, ensuring that each vintage reflects the distinct characteristics of its vineyards.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate’s 90 hectares of vineyards are situated on deep gravel beds over limestone, typical of the Pauillac region. This soil composition provides excellent drainage and heat retention, fostering optimal ripening conditions for the vines. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, creating a favorable microclimate that reduces frost risk and promotes even grape maturation. Sustainable viticultural practices are employed to maintain soil health and biodiversity, ensuring the longevity and quality of the vineyards.
Grape Varietals
The 2003 vintage of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is composed of:
• 72% Cabernet Sauvignon
• 26% Merlot
• 2% Cabernet Franc
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2003 growing season was marked by an exceptionally hot summer, leading to early ripening and concentrated fruit. Harvesting was conducted manually from September 15 to 26, ensuring the selection of optimal fruit. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to enhance texture and stability. The wine was then aged for approximately 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with about 50% being new oak, imparting complexity and integrating tannins.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2003 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste has an alcohol content of approximately 13%.
