Winery Background and History
Founded in 1941 by Aloyse Meyer, Domaine Josmeyer is a family-owned estate located near Colmar in Alsace, France. Now in its fifth generation, the estate is managed by sisters Isabelle and Céline Meyer. The name “Josmeyer” combines the founder’s father’s name, Joseph, with the family surname, Meyer. The estate comprises 28 hectares of vineyards spread across five distinct terroirs, benefiting from an exceptional microclimate. Since 2004, the entire vineyard has been cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles.
Producer and Winemaker
Isabelle Meyer oversees the winemaking process, while her sister Céline manages the estate’s administration. Together, they focus on producing wines that express the purity and complexity of their unique terroirs, adhering to sustainable and biodynamic practices.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The grapes for “Les Folastries” are sourced from four plots on alluvial and gravel soils located on the plain around the town of Wintzenheim and one plot in Wettolsheim. These soils, similar to those found in Graves, contribute to the aromatic richness and elegance of the wine. The region’s favorable microclimate further enhances grape maturation and flavor development.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
100% Gewürztraminer
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes are hand-harvested and pressed whole using pneumatic presses for about 6 hours. Natural settling occurs without the addition of enzymes or yeasts, and fermentation starts spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. For this cuvée, fermentation and aging on fine lees take place in stainless steel vats to preserve the wine’s freshness and aromatic intensity. Before bottling, the wine is filtered.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
Approximately 13-14.5%
Tasting Notes
This Gewürztraminer exudes a twirling, dense, and assertive character. On the nose, yellow rose rubs shoulders with cardamom, coriander, and ginger root mixed with mango or lychee. The palate reveals aromatic peppers linked to the flesh of the fruit and the spirit of the garden in summer. The salinity carried by the structure of the old vines accompanies the matter, which opens out after a few minutes of aeration.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Gewürztraminer pairs well with tomato and fennel in summer and celery in winter. It is also superb with smoked salmon or exotic salads.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve chilled at around 8-10°C (46-50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic profile and complexity. It’s recommended to open the bottle shortly before serving to preserve its freshness.
Storage and Aging Potential
While enjoyable upon release, this wine can develop additional complexity with short-term cellaring. When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures, it can be enjoyed over the next 3 to 5 years.
