Winery Background and History
Founded in 1854, Domaine Josmeyer is a family-owned winery located in Wintzenheim, near Colmar in Alsace, France. Now managed by the fifth generation, sisters Céline and Isabelle Meyer, the estate has been certified biodynamic since 2004. Their commitment to sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking reflects their dedication to producing wines that authentically express the unique terroir of Alsace.
Producer and Winemaker
Isabelle Meyer serves as the head winemaker, focusing on creating pure and expressive wines that embody the character of their vineyards. Her approach emphasizes the use of indigenous yeasts and traditional fermentation methods, allowing each cuvée to develop its distinct personality.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The grapes for “Mise du Printemps” are sourced from approximately 20 small parcels with diverse elevations. These vineyards feature iron-rich marl limestone and alluvial gravel soils, particularly around the Grand Cru Hengst area. The varied terroir, combined with a temperate climate influenced by the nearby Vosges Mountains, contributes to the wine’s complexity and balance.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2023 vintage is composed of:
• 70% Pinot Auxerrois
• 30% Pinot Blanc
This blend showcases the richness of Pinot Auxerrois complemented by the freshness of Pinot Blanc.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Hand-harvested grapes undergo a gentle, long pneumatic pressing lasting about six hours. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in century-old wooden tuns. The wine is then aged on fine lees in these old foudres until bottling in early spring, capturing the vitality and freshness of the new vintage.
