Winery Background and History
Established in 1854, Domaine Josmeyer is a family-owned estate located near Colmar in Alsace, France. The estate spans approximately 24.4 hectares, with vineyards distributed over 90 distinct plots, including prestigious sites like Herrenweg, Rorenberg, and the Grand Crus Hengst and Brand. Since 2004, Josmeyer has been certified organic and biodynamic, reflecting a commitment to sustainable viticulture. Currently, the fifth generation, sisters Céline and Isabelle Meyer, manage the estate. Céline oversees vineyard operations, while Isabelle handles vinification. Their wines are renowned for remarkable purity, with Grand Crus exhibiting notable minerality and salinity. The French wine magazine Bettane & Desseauve praises Josmeyer’s wines for their “light and refined palates that are fresh and chiselled.”
Producer and Winemaker
Céline Meyer manages the vineyards, ensuring adherence to biodynamic principles, while Isabelle Meyer is responsible for the winemaking process. Together, they continue the family tradition of crafting wines that express the unique terroirs of Alsace.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Riesling “Le Dragon” originates from the Drachenloch vineyard, translating to “Dragon’s Lair,” situated on the slopes above Turckheim. This south-facing site is considered one of the warmest in Alsace, benefiting from exceptional sun exposure. The vineyard’s limestone soils contribute to the wine’s vibrant mineral character. The microclimate, combined with the protective rocky outcrop shielding the vines from northern and eastern winds, creates an ideal environment for Riesling cultivation. The 40-year-old vines thrive in this setting, producing grapes with concentrated flavors and balanced acidity.

Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes are hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and quality. Upon arrival at the winery, whole clusters are gently pressed in pneumatic presses for about six hours, allowing for delicate extraction of juice while minimizing bitterness. The must undergoes natural settling without the addition of enzymes. Fermentation is initiated spontaneously with indigenous yeasts present in the environment, taking place in century-old barrels. This method preserves the natural expression of the terroir and grape variety. Following fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees for several months, enhancing texture and complexity. Prior to bottling, which typically occurs during the summer following the harvest, the wine is filtered to ensure clarity and stability.

Tasting Notes
The 2022 “Le Dragon” Riesling is light and dry, subtly laced with floral, apple, and mineral aromas and flavors. It is balanced and harmonious, with a long, mouthwatering finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Riesling pairs perfectly with hard goat cheeses, including those coated in ash. Its acidity and mineral notes also complement seafood dishes, such as grilled fish or shellfish, and it can balance the richness of creamy poultry dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve chilled at around 10°C (50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic profile and minerality. Opening the bottle shortly before serving allows the wine to express its fresh and vibrant character.
Storage and Aging Potential
While enjoyable in its youth for its fresh and lively flavors, this Riesling has the potential to develop additional complexity with short to medium-term cellaring. When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures, it can evolve over the next 5 to 7 years, gaining depth and nuance.
