Winery Background and History

Established in 1854, Domaine Josmeyer is a family-owned estate located near Colmar in Alsace, France. Over five generations, the Meyer family has cultivated approximately 28 hectares of vineyards, benefiting from an exceptional microclimate with some of the lowest annual rainfall in France. In the late 1990s, the estate transitioned to organic and biodynamic viticulture, achieving certification in 2004. This commitment reflects their philosophy of harmonizing with nature to produce wines that express the purity and complexity of their unique terroirs. Today, sisters Céline and Isabelle Meyer manage the estate, continuing the family tradition of crafting elegant and expressive Alsace wines.

Producer and Winemaker

Céline Meyer oversees the vineyards, ensuring adherence to biodynamic principles, while Isabelle Meyer is responsible for the winemaking process. Together, they focus on producing wines that reflect the unique terroirs of Alsace, maintaining the estate’s reputation for quality and sustainability.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes for “Le Kottabe” are sourced from vineyards located around Wintzenheim, Turckheim, and Wettolsheim. These areas are characterized by alluvial and gravelly soils, which provide excellent drainage and contribute to the mineral complexity of the wine. The region benefits from a semi-continental climate, with cold winters and warm, sunny summers. The Vosges Mountains to the west create a rain shadow effect, resulting in lower rainfall and promoting optimal ripening conditions. This unique microclimate, combined with the diverse soil composition, allows for the cultivation of Riesling grapes that are both expressive and balanced, capturing the essence of their terroir.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2021 “Le Kottabe” Riesling is crafted following traditional methods that respect the biodynamic principles upheld by Domaine Josmeyer. The grapes are hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and quality. Upon arrival at the winery, whole clusters are gently pressed in pneumatic presses for about six hours, allowing for delicate extraction of juice while minimizing bitterness. The must undergoes natural settling without the addition of enzymes. Fermentation is initiated spontaneously with indigenous yeasts present in the environment, taking place in century-old wooden casks. This approach preserves the natural expression of the terroir and grape variety. Following fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees for several months, enhancing its texture and complexity. Prior to bottling, which typically occurs in late spring or early summer, the wine is filtered to ensure stability and clarity. This meticulous process results in a dry Riesling that is both firm and elegant, embodying the essence of its origin.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 “Le Kottabe” Riesling presents a medium lemon hue. On the nose, it offers aromas of white peach, lime, grapefruit, white flowers, and flint. The palate is dry and balanced, opening with citrus notes, followed by a lively structure and a long, lemony finish. Flavors include lime, mandarin orange, lemon, crushed stone, lemon zest, yellow apple, with hints of baking spices and salt. The wine exhibits medium-plus acidity, medium alcohol, and medium-plus body, with a medium finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This dry Riesling pairs well with seafood dishes, such as grilled fish or shellfish, as well as poultry and light salads. Its lively acidity and citrus notes complement dishes with fresh herbs and light sauces, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and crispness, serve this Riesling well-chilled at around 8-10°C (46-50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. This temperature accentuates the wine’s freshness and allows its nuanced aromas to shine. It’s recommended to open the bottle shortly before serving to preserve its delicate aromatics.

Storage and Aging Potential

While this Riesling is enjoyable upon release, displaying vibrant fruit flavors and crisp acidity, it also has the potential to develop additional complexity with cellaring. When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures, it can be enjoyed over the next 5 to 7 years, during which it may develop richer textures and more integrated flavors.
