Winery Background and History

Château Kirwan, a distinguished Third Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is situated in the Margaux appellation of the Médoc region. The estate’s origins trace back to the 18th century when it was acquired by Mark Kirwan, an Irish merchant who expanded the vineyards and elevated the château’s reputation. In 1925, the Schröder and Schÿler families, both renowned Bordeaux négociants, acquired Château Kirwan. Under their stewardship, the estate has continued to uphold its legacy, producing wines that exemplify the elegance and finesse characteristic of Margaux.

Producer and Winemaker

Since 1925, Château Kirwan has been owned by the négociant firm Schröder and Schÿler. The estate is managed by the Schÿler family, who have maintained a commitment to quality and tradition. The winemaking team focuses on producing wines that express the unique terroir of Margaux, combining traditional methods with modern techniques to achieve high quality.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The estate’s vineyards cover approximately 35 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The soils are a mix of gravel and clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the complexity of the wines. Situated on the Cantenac plateau, the vineyards benefit from a temperate maritime climate, with the nearby Gironde estuary moderating temperatures and reducing frost risk. This unique microclimate, combined with the diverse soil composition, allows for the cultivation of high-quality grapes that embody the distinctive terroir of Château Kirwan.

Grape Varietals

The 2015 Château Kirwan is composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2015 vintage experienced favorable growing conditions, with a warm, dry summer leading to optimal ripening. Harvesting was conducted by hand to preserve fruit integrity. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise control over the process to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to enhance texture and stability. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 18 months. This aging process contributed to the development of complex aromas and flavors, as well as the integration of tannins, resulting in a wine with depth and elegance.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2015 Château Kirwan has an alcohol content of approximately 13.9%.

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Château Kirwan displays a deep ruby color. The nose offers pronounced aromas of black currant, blackberry, cedar, vanilla, and hints of mint and cinnamon. On the palate, it is full-bodied with high acidity and high tannins, presenting flavors of black currant, blackberry, and cedar. The finish is long and persistent.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, and game dishes. It also complements rich stews and aged cheeses, where its structure and depth enhance the dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the 2015 Château Kirwan at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully express its aromatic profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under optimal conditions, the 2015 Château Kirwan has the potential to develop further complexity over the next several decades, with a peak drinking window extending from 2020 to 2040.
