Winery Background and History
Château Montrose, established in 1815, is a prestigious estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France. Renowned for producing exceptional wines, the château’s name, meaning “Pink Hill,” reflects the pink heather that once covered its gravelly slopes. In 2006, the Bouygues family acquired the estate, investing in significant renovations to enhance both the vineyards and winemaking facilities, thereby elevating the quality and reputation of Château Montrose.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the ownership of the Bouygues family, Château Montrose is managed by a dedicated team committed to excellence. The estate’s technical director oversees vineyard operations and winemaking processes, ensuring that traditional methods are complemented by modern innovations to produce wines that authentically express the terroir of Saint-Estèphe.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate’s vineyards span approximately 95 hectares, situated on gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage, ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Proximity to the Gironde estuary creates a microclimate that moderates temperatures and reduces frost risk, promoting optimal grape ripening. This unique combination of soil and climate conditions contributes to the complexity and depth characteristic of Château Montrose wines.
Grape Varietals
The 2017 La Dame de Montrose is composed of 49% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2017 vintage presented challenges, including spring frosts and a warm, dry summer. Meticulous vineyard management ensured the production of high-quality fruit. Hand-harvested grapes underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression. Malolactic fermentation followed to enhance texture and stability. The wine was aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 12 months, contributing to its complexity and tannin integration.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
Approximately 13%.
Tasting Notes

The expressive nose offers aromas of black fruits such as blueberry, blackberry, and black cherry, complemented by subtle notes of cedar and tobacco leaves. On the palate, the wine presents tension and length, with precise and silky tannins, leading to a balanced and elegant finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, and game dishes. It also complements rich stews and aged cheeses, where its structure and depth enhance the dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the 2017 La Dame de Montrose at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully express its aromatic profile.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions, the 2017 La Dame de Montrose has the potential to develop further complexity over the next several years, with a peak drinking window extending from 2022 to 2035.
