Winery Background and History: Fattoria La Màgia is a family-owned estate located in the heart of Montalcino, Tuscany. Established in the 1970s, the Schwarz family has dedicated themselves to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. Emphasizing sustainability, the estate transitioned to biodynamic practices and achieved certification, ensuring that their winemaking process respects both tradition and the environment.

Producer and Winemaker: Under the guidance of Fabian Schwarz, the current generation continues the family’s legacy of winemaking excellence. Fabian, with his profound respect for nature and commitment to quality, oversees all aspects of production. His approach combines traditional methods with modern technology, aiming to craft wines that authentically express the character of their vineyards.

Vineyards and Microclimate: The estate encompasses 52 hectares of vineyards situated at an altitude of 400 to 450 meters above sea level on the central-southeast slopes of Montalcino. The soils are predominantly stony sand over a clay subsoil, providing excellent drainage and nutrient retention. This, coupled with the region’s Mediterranean climate characterized by warm days and cool nights, creates ideal conditions for cultivating Sangiovese grapes.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used: 100% Sangiovese

Vinification & Aging Methods: The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is produced from the same Sangiovese grapes as the estate’s Brunello, but undergoes a distinct vinification process. After hand-harvesting in the third week of September, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and large oak casks, with maceration on the skins lasting approximately 40 days. The wine is then aged for six months in third-use casks, allowing it to develop complexity while maintaining its youthful freshness.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume): Approximately 14%

Tasting Notes: This Rosso di Montalcino pours a deep ruby red, exuding vibrant aromas of spiced red fruits, including ripe cherry and red currant. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a soft texture, displaying lively fruit flavors complemented by bright acidity and well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and textured, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and balance.

Food & Wine Pairing: The versatility of this wine makes it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs beautifully with tomato-based pasta, enhancing the rich flavors of the sauce. Grilled sausages and mushroom risotto also complement the wine’s fruit-forward profile and acidity. Additionally, it harmonizes well with hard cheeses, making it a delightful choice for cheese platters.

Service Methods and Temperatures: To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino, it is recommended to serve the wine at room temperature, around 18°C (64°F). Decanting is not necessary for this youthful wine; however, allowing it to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its aromatic profile. Using medium-sized red wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.

Storage and Aging Potential: While the Rosso di Montalcino is crafted for early enjoyment, it possesses the structure to age gracefully. When stored in optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), and with controlled humidity—the wine can develop additional complexity over the next 8 to 15 years. Over time, expect the emergence of tertiary flavors such as dried fruits and subtle earthy notes.
