Winery Background and History
Château Lafite Rothschild, located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France, is one of the most esteemed wine estates globally. Its history dates back to the 17th century, gaining prominence under the ownership of the Ségur family. In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired the château, and it has remained under the stewardship of the Rothschild family since. Recognized as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Lafite Rothschild is renowned for producing wines of exceptional elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Producer and Winemaker
The estate is currently managed by Saskia de Rothschild, representing the eighth generation of the Rothschild family. She works alongside Technical Director Eric Kohler, ensuring that the winemaking process honors traditional methods while incorporating modern innovations to maintain the highest quality standards.
Vineyards and Microclimate
Château Lafite Rothschild’s vineyards cover approximately 112 hectares, predominantly situated on deep gravel soils over limestone subsoil, ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon. The proximity to the Gironde estuary provides a moderating climate, protecting the vines from extreme temperatures and fostering a unique microclimate that contributes to the distinctiveness of the wines.
Grape Varietals
The 2009 vintage is composed of approximately 82.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 0.5% Petit Verdot.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2009 harvest began on September 28 and concluded on October 12. Fermentation took place in traditional wooden vats, allowing for precise temperature control and gentle extraction of flavors and tannins. Following fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to enhance its texture and stability. The aging process involved 18 to 20 months in new French oak barrels crafted by the estate’s own cooperage, imparting subtle oak nuances and contributing to the wine’s complexity and aging potential.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2009 Château Lafite Rothschild has an alcohol content of approximately 13.5%.
Tasting Notes
The 2009 vintage exhibits a deep garnet color. The nose reveals aromas of ripe blackcurrants, cedar, graphite, and hints of tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied with velvety tannins, offering flavors of dark berries, licorice, and a touch of minerality. The finish is long and harmonious, reflecting the wine’s exceptional balance and elegance.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, and game dishes. It also complements aged cheeses, enhancing the dining experience with its depth and complexity.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully express its aromatic profile.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions, the 2009 vintage has the potential to develop further complexity over the next several decades, with a peak drinking window extending from 2020 to 2050.
