Winery Background and History
Château Lafon-Rochet, a distinguished Fourth Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is situated in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France. The estate’s origins trace back to the 16th century when it was owned by the Lafon family. In the 20th century, the Tesseron family acquired the property and initiated significant renovations to enhance both the vineyards and winemaking facilities. Today, Château Lafon-Rochet is recognized for producing wines that exemplify the robust and structured character typical of Saint-Estèphe, while also offering elegance and finesse.
Producer and Winemaker
The Tesseron family continues to oversee Château Lafon-Rochet, with a dedicated team managing viticulture and winemaking. Their approach combines traditional Bordeaux practices with modern techniques to craft wines that reflect the unique terroir of the estate.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate encompasses approximately 45 hectares of vineyards, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, along with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The gravelly soils of Saint-Estèphe provide excellent drainage, essential for the cultivation of high-quality grapes. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, reducing the risk of frost and promoting a favorable microclimate for vine growth. The 2013 growing season presented challenges, including a cool and wet spring that delayed flowering and led to uneven fruit set. However, a warm and dry summer allowed for gradual ripening, resulting in grapes that, despite lower yields, exhibited concentration and balance.
Grape Varietals
The 2013 vintage is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvesting was conducted manually to ensure the selection of optimal fruit. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing precise management of maceration and extraction. Malolactic fermentation occurred partly in new oak barrels and partly in tanks, enhancing the wine’s texture and complexity. The wine was then aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, with 55% being new oak, imparting subtle oak nuances and contributing to the wine’s structure.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The alcohol content is approximately 13%.
Tasting Notes
The 2013 Château Lafon-Rochet displays a dense red color. The nose offers fine expressions of vineyard-influenced Cabernet fruit, complemented by good Merlot ripeness. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with elegant and fine tannins, leading to a harmonious finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with roasted lamb, grilled beef, and game dishes. Its balanced acidity and tannic structure also complement hard cheeses and hearty stews.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully express its aromatic profile.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2013 vintage is approachable in its youth but can develop further complexity with 5-10 years of cellaring, with a recommended drinking window from 2017 to 2028.
