Winery Background and History

Le Clos Galerne is a 12-hectare estate located in the heart of Anjou Noir, within France’s Loire Valley. Established in 2018 by Myrtille and Cédric Bourez, the domaine encompasses vineyards in notable lieux-dits such as Pierre Bise and Moulin Brûlé in Beaulieu-sur-Layon, as well as plots in Savennières, Chaume, and Quarts-de-Chaume. The estate is committed to producing terroir-driven wines with an emphasis on sustainability, low yields, and meticulous manual vineyard management. The name “Galerne” refers to the northwesterly wind that sweeps through the region, a nod to both the local climate and the historical events that have shaped the area.

Producer and Winemaker

Cédric Bourez leads the winemaking at Le Clos Galerne. With a background that includes experience at Château d’Esclans in Provence, Cédric brings a wealth of knowledge to the estate. His approach focuses on organic farming practices and minimal intervention in the cellar, aiming to create wines that authentically express the unique terroirs of Anjou.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The “Ronceray” cuvée is sourced from vineyards located in the esteemed Chaume and Quarts-de-Chaume areas. The soils here are diverse, comprising schist, rhyolite, and sedimentary rocks, which contribute to the complexity and minerality of the wine. The region benefits from a temperate climate, with the Layon River providing a moderating influence that aids in the slow and even ripening of the Chenin Blanc grapes. The combination of these factors results in wines with pronounced freshness, minerality, and depth.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes for “Ronceray” are hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and quality. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts, reflecting the estate’s commitment to natural winemaking practices. The wine is aged in 400-liter oak barrels, which allows for subtle oxygenation and the development of complex flavors without overwhelming the delicate fruit characteristics. This method enhances the wine’s texture and adds layers of complexity, resulting in a harmonious balance between freshness and richness.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 “Ronceray” Anjou Blanc presents a complex and layered profile. On the nose, it offers aromas of nuts, spice, and wax, accompanied by a fresh, stony, and mineral edge. The palate is supple yet dense, rich, and opulent, developing pleasant bitterness. The wine is slender, complex, and powerful, blending notes of orchard fruits, stone fruits, and citrus. It marries tension, power, salinity, and vibrancy, making it enjoyable now and in the years to come.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Anjou Blanc pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and mineral notes complement seafood such as oysters, grilled fish, and shrimp. It also pairs well with poultry dishes, creamy sauces, and soft cheeses like goat cheese. The wine’s freshness and complexity make it a versatile companion to many cuisines.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and crispness, serve the “Ronceray” Anjou Blanc well-chilled at around 10-12°C (50-54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. This temperature accentuates the wine’s freshness and allows its nuanced aromas to shine. It’s recommended to open the bottle shortly before serving to preserve its delicate aromatics.

Storage and Aging Potential

While this Anjou Blanc is enjoyable upon release, displaying vibrant fruit flavors and crisp acidity, it also has the potential to develop additional complexity with cellaring. When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures, it can be enjoyed over the next 5 to 7 years, during which it may develop richer textures and more pronounced mineral characteristics.
