Winery Background and History

Leeuwin Estate, established in 1973 by Denis and Tricia Horgan, is a renowned family-owned winery located in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. With guidance from the esteemed Robert Mondavi, the estate transformed from a cattle farm into a premier vineyard. Leeuwin Estate is celebrated for its “Art Series” wines, which showcase labels featuring works by Australian artists, reflecting the winery’s commitment to the arts and fine winemaking.

Producer and Winemaker

The Horgan family continues to oversee the estate, with their children, Justin and Simone, serving as joint Chief Executive Officers. The winemaking team is led by Senior Winemaker Tim Lovett, who upholds the estate’s philosophy of producing wines that express the unique terroir of Margaret River. Their approach combines traditional techniques with modern innovations to craft wines of exceptional quality and character.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Situated in the southern part of Margaret River, Leeuwin Estate benefits from a maritime climate, with warm summers and mild winters. The vineyards are planted on gravelly loam soils over a subsoil of clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing to vine health. Proximity to the Indian Ocean moderates temperatures, ensuring a long growing season that allows for the gradual ripening of grapes, resulting in wines with complexity and balance.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The 2015 “Art Series” Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, sourced exclusively from the estate’s vineyards.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes were hand-harvested and underwent meticulous sorting to ensure only the finest fruit was utilized. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit flavors. Post-fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 18 months. This aging process imparts subtle oak nuances and enhances the wine’s structure and complexity.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2015 vintage has an alcohol content of approximately 13.5% ABV, typical for premium Cabernet Sauvignons from this region.

Tasting Notes

The 2015 “Art Series” Cabernet Sauvignon presents a concentrated dark fruit spectrum with an abundance of ripe blackcurrants, cherries, and a hint of cassis. Coffee bean, dark chocolate, and black olives lie beneath. Subtle dustiness combines with a seductive violet lift, enhancing the varietal fragrance and increasing complexity. A dense and layered palate with incredible texture. The generosity of the palate is carefully laced with a fine and structural acid line. Dark cherries and currants weave through smoky and mocha notes, finishing with long tactile tannins.

Food & Wine Pairing

This elegant Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, or venison. It also complements rich, savory dishes like mushroom risotto or aged cheddar cheese, enhancing the wine’s nuanced flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity, serve this wine at a temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes prior to serving can help open up its bouquet and soften the tannins, enhancing the overall tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2015 “Art Series” Cabernet Sauvignon has the potential to age gracefully for 10-15 years under proper cellaring conditions. As it matures, the wine is expected to develop further complexity, with tertiary flavors emerging and the tannins becoming more integrated, offering an even more refined drinking experience.
