Winery Background and History
Leeuwin Estate, established in 1973 by Denis and Tricia Horgan in Margaret River, Western Australia, is a family-owned winery renowned for its premium wines and commitment to the arts. The estate’s journey into winemaking began with the guidance of legendary Californian vintner Robert Mondavi, who identified the property’s potential for viticulture. Over the years, Leeuwin Estate has become synonymous with excellence, particularly through its “Art Series” wines, which feature labels adorned with artworks from leading contemporary Australian artists. The estate produces around 60,000 cases of wine annually from its 121 acres of vineyards, focusing on varietals such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Riesling. The “Art Series Chardonnay” is especially celebrated, having been recognized as one of Australia’s finest Chardonnays and achieving international acclaim. Beyond winemaking, Leeuwin Estate hosts an annual concert series and houses an art gallery, reflecting its dedication to integrating fine wine, food, art, and music.
Producer and Winemaker
The Horgan family continues to oversee Leeuwin Estate, with Denis and Tricia’s children, Justin and Simone, serving as Joint Chief Executive Officers. The winemaking team is led by Senior Winemaker Tim Lovett, who brings a modern approach while respecting the estate’s traditions. Tim focuses on crafting wines that express the unique terroir of Margaret River, emphasizing balance, elegance, and longevity. His meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery ensures the consistent high quality of Leeuwin’s wines.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Leeuwin Estate’s vineyards are situated in the Margaret River region, approximately 3 kilometers from the Indian Ocean, benefiting from a maritime climate that provides mild temperatures and cooling sea breezes. The 2020 vintage experienced a warm and dry growing season, leading to an early harvest. These conditions contributed to the development of concentrated flavors and natural acidity in the Chardonnay grapes. The estate’s vineyards are planted on gravelly loam soils over a subsoil of clay, offering excellent drainage and moisture retention, which are ideal for viticulture. Sustainable farming practices are employed to maintain soil health and vineyard biodiversity, ensuring the longevity and productivity of the vines. The combination of favorable climate, soil composition, and careful vineyard management allows Leeuwin Estate to produce Chardonnay grapes of exceptional quality, characterized by their intensity, complexity, and balance.

Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2020 Art Series Chardonnay was crafted from hand-harvested grapes, which were promptly chilled and whole-bunch pressed to preserve their delicate aromatics and flavors. The juice underwent primary fermentation in 100% French oak barrels, with a portion of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation to enhance texture and complexity. The wine was then aged in barrel for approximately 11 months, with regular lees stirring to build mouthfeel and integrate flavors. This meticulous approach to vinification and aging results in a Chardonnay that harmoniously balances fruit purity with subtle oak influence, showcasing the elegance and finesse characteristic of Leeuwin Estate’s Art Series.

Tasting Notes
The 2020 Art Series Chardonnay presents a bright pale yellow color with captivating aromas of lemon, crisp pear, fresh pineapple, and candied orange. On the palate, it is very crisp and focused, with a wonderful freshness that’s hard to resist. The wine’s vibrant acidity and pronounced minerality lead to a long, ample finish that’s very clean.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its aromatic profile and dry finish make it an excellent companion to seafood, marinated or grilled fish, salads, goat cheese, spring vegetables, as well as all white meats. The wine’s crisp acidity complements the flavors of these dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic profile, serve the wine chilled at around 8-10°C (46-50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its aromas.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2020 Art Series Chardonnay is suitable for immediate enjoyment but can also be cellared for up to 10-15 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures will allow the wine to develop additional complexity over time, revealing deeper layers of flavor and a more integrated palate.
