Winery Background and History

Château Lagrange, located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, boasts a prestigious history dating back to the 14th century. Classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the estate experienced a renaissance after its acquisition by Suntory in 1983. Significant investments revitalized the vineyards and winemaking facilities, restoring Château Lagrange’s reputation for producing exceptional wines. In 1996, the estate introduced “Les Arums de Lagrange,” one of the first white wines vinified in barrels in the Médoc, showcasing their innovative spirit and commitment to quality.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the guidance of General Manager Matthieu Bordes and Consultant Oenologist Éric Boissenot, Château Lagrange emphasizes traditional Bordeaux winemaking techniques while embracing modern innovations. Their collaborative approach ensures that each vintage reflects the unique terroir and maintains the estate’s high standards.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The 11-hectare vineyard dedicated to white varieties spans the communes of Cussac-Fort-Médoc and Saint-Laurent-de-Médoc. These plots feature distinct terroirs of gravelly sand and limestone clay, providing optimal conditions for cultivating Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, and Sémillon. The Médoc’s temperate maritime climate, characterized by moderate rainfall and ample sunshine, promotes balanced ripening and preserves the grapes’ aromatic freshness.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Harvesting for the 2021 vintage occurred between September 8th and 24th, with grapes picked exclusively in the cool morning hours to retain their aromatic potential. The whole bunches underwent gentle pressing, followed by cold settling for 12 hours. Fermentation took place in 225-liter barrels, with no malolactic fermentation to preserve acidity. The wine matured for six months in barrels, 50% of which were new, enhancing complexity and imparting subtle oak nuances.

Tasting Notes

Les Arums de Lagrange 2021 presents a pale, slightly golden hue. The nose is characterized by citrus notes such as lemon, orange peel, and grapefruit. On the palate, it is fresh and lively, supported by pleasant acidity and a slight creaminess due to barrel aging. The harmonious blend of citrus and subtle oak results in a refreshing and complex profile.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Bordeaux Blanc pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, including Greek-style chicken, salt-baked salmon fillets, and porchetta. Its vibrant acidity and citrus notes complement seafood and poultry, while the wine’s subtle creaminess enhances richer flavors, making it a versatile companion for diverse culinary experiences.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity, serve Les Arums de Lagrange 2021 chilled at 10-12°C (50-54°F). Using a white wine glass with a slightly tapered rim will concentrate the aromas, enhancing the tasting experience. Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine a few minutes to breathe after opening can further reveal its nuanced bouquet.

Storage and Aging Potential

While crafted for early enjoyment, this wine possesses the structure to age gracefully over the next 5-7 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with consistent temperature and humidity will allow it to develop additional complexity, with evolving flavors and aromas rewarding patient cellaring.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The 2021 blend comprises 62% Sauvignon Blanc, 27% Sémillon, and 11% Sauvignon Gris. This composition balances the crisp acidity and aromatic intensity of Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris with the roundness and subtle richness of Sémillon.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

Les Arums de Lagrange 2021 has an alcohol content of 13.0%, aligning with the typical profile of Bordeaux Blanc wines and contributing to its balanced and approachable character.
