Winery Background and History
Maison Louis Jadot, established in 1859, is a renowned Burgundy wine producer known for its commitment to quality and tradition. Over the years, the house has expanded its holdings across various appellations, producing wines that reflect the diversity of Burgundy’s terroirs.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Louis Jadot is dedicated to crafting wines that express the unique characteristics of each vineyard site. Their approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques to ensure consistency and excellence in every bottle.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation is located in the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy. The vineyards benefit from a continental climate, characterized by cold winters and warm summers, which is ideal for Pinot Noir cultivation. The soils are predominantly limestone and clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the complexity and minerality of the wines. The varied elevations and exposures within the appellation create a range of microclimates, allowing for the cultivation of grapes with diverse flavor profiles.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2021 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir grapes.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes are handpicked and sorted to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation is carried out using natural yeasts, followed by a long maceration period to extract color, flavor, and tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with approximately one-third being new oak, for 16 months. This process enhances the wine’s complexity and allows it to develop its characteristic structure and depth.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2021 vintage has an alcohol content of approximately 13.31% ABV.
Tasting Notes
This is a full-bodied and powerful red wine, yet with an elegant texture and refined presence. Aromas of Bing cherry and mocha are intriguing, while over the long finish more subtle dried flower and spice notes emerge.
Food & Wine Pairing
This powerful and perfumed wine requires elaborate, flavorful foods such as leg of lamb, boeuf bourguignon, and strong cheeses.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity, serve this wine at a temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes prior to serving can help open up its bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
This wine has the potential to age gracefully for 10-15 years under proper cellaring conditions, developing further complexity and depth over time.
Scores
• Wine Advocate: 91-93 points. A blend of Cazetiers, Combe Aux Moines, and Poissenots, Jadot’s one-off 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, licorice, spices, and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample, and fleshy, with good concentration, powdery tannins, and a seamless, complete profile, it has turned out nicely.
• Vinous: 90-92 points. The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a far superior nose to the Morey-Saint-Denis Village, with bright red berry fruit laced with undergrowth. The palate is well-balanced with decent tannins. It’s fleshy but has grip and purity towards the finish. This is clearly the finest Village Cru from Jadot this year and comes highly recommended.
