Winery Background and History
Founded in 1956 in Calamandrana, Piedmont, Michele Chiarlo is a family-owned winery renowned for producing wines that express the unique terroirs of the region. The winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques, crafting wines that reflect the elegance and complexity of Piedmont’s native grape varieties. Michele Chiarlo’s commitment to quality and innovation has established it as a benchmark producer in the Langhe and Monferrato areas.
Producer and Wine Maker
Michele Chiarlo, the founder, has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Piedmontese wines on the global stage. His son, Stefano Chiarlo, continues the legacy, overseeing viticulture and winemaking. Their philosophy centers on minimal intervention, allowing the character of each vineyard to shine through. The Chiarlo family’s dedication ensures that each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Barbera grapes for Le Orme are sourced from several vineyards in the Nizza area, including the La Court estate. These vineyards are characterized by light-colored, sedimentary soils known as “Astian Sands,” rich in lime and microelements. The region’s continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, enhances the grapes’ aromatic complexity and acidity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks with a 10-day maceration period using a gentle “shower” system to wet the cap at temperatures between 27–32°C. Malolactic fermentation follows in steel tanks. The wine is then aged for a minimum of 16 months, including 3 months in large oak casks, followed by refinement in stainless steel and bottle before release.
Tasting Notes
Le Orme 2021 displays a ruby red color with violet hues. The nose is elegant and intense, offering notes of fresh and mature red fruits such as cherry and currant. On the palate, it is harmonious, with good structure and roundness, culminating in a savory finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with pasta dishes featuring tomato sauce, pizza, Livorno-style fish, and white meats. Its vibrant acidity and fruity profile complement a variety of dishes, making it a versatile choice for both casual and formal dining experiences.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve Le Orme at a temperature of 18°C (64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and structural balance. Using medium-sized red wine glasses will allow the wine to express its full bouquet. No decanting is necessary for this fresh and vibrant red wine.
Storage and Aging Potential
While Le Orme is enjoyable upon release, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to 5 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark place with stable temperatures will allow the wine to maintain its freshness and develop subtle complexity over time.
