Winery Background and History
Founded in 1956 in Calamandrana, Piedmont, Michele Chiarlo is a family-owned winery renowned for producing wines that express the unique terroirs of the region. The winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques, crafting wines that reflect the elegance and complexity of Piedmont’s native grape varieties. Michele Chiarlo’s commitment to quality and innovation has established it as a benchmark producer in the Langhe and Monferrato areas.
Producer and Winemaker
Michele Chiarlo, the founder, has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Piedmontese wines on the global stage. His son, Stefano Chiarlo, continues the legacy, overseeing viticulture and winemaking. Their philosophy centers on minimal intervention, allowing the character of each vineyard to shine through. The Chiarlo family’s dedication ensures that each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Barbera grapes for Le Orme are sourced from several vineyards in southern Asti, including the La Court estate. These vineyards are characterized by Astian sands—light-colored soils rich in lime and micro-elements. The 2022 vintage was challenging, with a warm and dry growing season and scarce rainfall. Despite these conditions, the grapes achieved excellent quality, resulting in wines with vibrant acidity and concentrated flavors.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks with 10 days of maceration on the skins, utilizing a soft “shower” system to wet the cap at temperatures between 27–32°C. Malolactic fermentation follows in steel. The wine is aged for a minimum of 16 months, including 3 months in large oak casks, followed by refinement in stainless steel and in bottle before release.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Le Orme exhibits a ruby red color with violet hues. The nose is elegant and intense, offering notes of ripe cherry and red currant. On the palate, it is harmonious and well-structured, with a beautiful savory finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with pasta with tomato sauce, pizza, Livorno-style fish, and white meats. Its vibrant acidity and fruity profile complement a variety of dishes, making it a versatile choice for both casual and formal dining experiences.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve Le Orme at a temperature of 18°C (64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and structural balance. Using medium-sized red wine glasses will allow the wine to express its full bouquet. Decanting is not necessary for this fresh and vibrant red wine.
Storage and Aging Potential
While Le Orme is enjoyable upon release, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to 5 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark place with stable temperatures will allow the wine to maintain its quality over this period.
