Winery Background and History
Founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo in Calamandrana, Piedmont, the winery has been a pioneer in showcasing the region’s potential for producing world-class wines. With a commitment to sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention, Michele Chiarlo has focused on expressing the unique terroirs of Piedmont, particularly in Barolo, Barbaresco, and Gavi. Over the decades, the winery has expanded its holdings to include some of the most prestigious crus in the region, consistently earning accolades for its dedication to quality and authenticity.
Producer and Wine Maker
Michele Chiarlo, the founder, has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Piedmontese wines globally. His son, Stefano Chiarlo, now oversees the winemaking process, bringing a modern touch while respecting traditional methods. Together, they have maintained a philosophy centered on expressing the character of each vineyard, ensuring that every bottle reflects the essence of its origin. Their collaborative approach has solidified the winery’s status as a benchmark for excellence in the region.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Le Marne vineyard is situated in the heart of the Gavi DOCG zone, characterized by calcareous clay-marl soils rich in iron and magnesium. The vineyard’s proximity to the Ligurian Sea and the Apennine Mountains creates a unique microclimate, with significant diurnal temperature variations that enhance the aromatic complexity of the Cortese grape. The 2022 vintage experienced a warm and dry growing season, leading to an early harvest of grapes with excellent quality and concentration.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes undergo partial cold maceration to extract delicate aromas, followed by soft pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures between 16–18°C using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged on fine lees for 3–4 months in stainless steel, enhancing its texture and complexity. This method preserves the freshness and varietal character of the Cortese grape, resulting in a wine that is both elegant and expressive.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Le Marne Gavi DOCG presents a straw yellow color with bright green hues. On the nose, it offers elegant and fresh aromas of golden apple, acacia flower, citrus, and bread crust. The palate is well-structured and fragrant, with a good length and a finish that is round and savory. The wine’s crisp acidity and mineral undertones make it a refreshing and versatile white, suitable for various occasions.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Gavi pairs exceptionally well with seafood dishes such as spaghetti with clams, grilled fish, and sushi. Its vibrant acidity and mineral notes also complement meat and fish carpaccio, as well as light pasta dishes. The wine’s freshness and elegance make it a perfect match for Mediterranean cuisine, enhancing the flavors of both simple and complex dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and structural balance, serve the Le Marne Gavi DOCG at a temperature of 10–11°C (50–52°F). Using medium-sized white wine glasses will allow the wine to express its full bouquet. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its complexity.
Storage and Aging Potential
While the Le Marne Gavi DOCG is enjoyable upon release, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to 3–4 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark place with stable temperatures will allow the wine to maintain its freshness and develop additional nuances, such as tertiary aromas of honey and dried herbs, enhancing its overall complexity.
