Winery Background and History

Founded in 1956 in Calamandrana, Piedmont, Michele Chiarlo is a family-owned winery renowned for producing wines that express the unique terroirs of the region. The winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques, crafting wines that reflect the elegance and complexity of Piedmont’s native grape varieties. Michele Chiarlo’s commitment to quality and innovation has established it as a benchmark producer in the Langhe and Monferrato areas.

Producer and Winemaker

Michele Chiarlo, the founder, has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Piedmontese wines on the global stage. His son, Stefano Chiarlo, continues the legacy, overseeing viticulture and winemaking. Their philosophy centers on minimal intervention, allowing the character of each vineyard to shine through. The Chiarlo family’s dedication ensures that each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Rovereto vineyard, situated in the commune of Gavi, is recognized as a historic Grand Cru of the region. The vineyard features calcareous clay-marl soils rich in iron and magnesium, contributing to the wine’s notable elegance and minerality. The 2023 vintage began with a mild and dry winter, followed by an equally dry spring. Rainfall in mid-May and June helped ahead of a long, hot, and dry summer. Significant rain at the end of August was essential to the proper ripening of the grapes, resulting in an exceptionally good quality vintage.

Vinification & Aging Methods

A portion of the grapes undergo cold pressing to enhance aromatic expression, followed by soft pressing. Fermentation occurs at controlled temperatures between 16–18°C in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for at least five months on the lees in stainless steel vats, which contributes to its complexity and mouthfeel.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Rovereto Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG presents a straw yellow color with green hues. The nose is intense and elegant, offering notes of white flowers, golden apple, chives, and minerals. On the palate, the wine is well-structured and fragrant, with a long, round, and savory finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Gavi pairs exceptionally well with seafood pasta, swordfish carpaccio, and veal tartare. Its vibrant acidity and mineral notes complement the delicate flavors of seafood and white meats, making it a versatile choice for various culinary experiences.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the Rovereto Gavi at a temperature of 10–11°C (50–52°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and structural balance. Using medium-sized white wine glasses will allow the wine to express its full bouquet. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its complexity.

Storage and Aging Potential

While the Rovereto Gavi is enjoyable upon release, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to 7–8 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark place with stable temperatures will allow the wine to develop additional nuances, such as tertiary aromas of honey and dried herbs, enhancing its overall complexity.
